"Ghost Town" Adventures
For some reason, I missed the memo
that Labor Day weekend is the time to pack up and take off for one last
weekend out of town. I understand the need for the final adventure, but
having just arrived at Butler, I had no intention of leaving my beloved
Indy - especially not with so many fun things going on this weekend.
Here is my list of arguments for staying in on a holiday weekend:
1. The Dive-In Movie
The
sophomore class board had the brilliant idea of sponsoring an event
that would get us all to take advantage of the awesome new swimming
pool at the HRC. So, Friday night, more than 70 of us hopped on the
inner-tubes and enjoyed Jaws projected on the wall of the pool! Definitely cooler than sitting on the couch.
2. Being lazy and watching tv
I am always way too busy to watch tv, but when I went running at the HRC on Saturday morning, the first episode of America’s Next Top Model
came on one of the televisions, and having nothing better to do, I
decided to watch it while I ran. I had never seen the show, but I was
curious about who got eliminated, so when I got home I turned on my tv
to finish the episode. “Oh my gosh! I love America’s Next Top Model!”
gushed my roommate. She sat down too, and as soon as we realized it was
a marathon, we were hooked. I’m always running around campus doing
something, so it was the first time all week that I’d had the chance to
just sit down and chill with my roommate for more than 20
minutes. However, after a few episodes, I had to tear myself away to
see…
3. The undefeated Butler Football team in action!
Okay,
so it was our first game… but that doesn’t make it any less true! It
was great to see Butler take on Albion this Saturday, because ever
since our team broke their losing streak last fall, everyone on campus
has been so proud of their improvement. I won’t lie – I’m not a huge
fan of watching football, but I still like to go and cheer for my Dawgs
and visit my friends who play in the band. The spirit of Butler sports
is always fun, whether we’re winning or not, but our 42-14 victory just
added to the sweetness.
4. Embarrassing moments that I’ll laugh about later.
One
of my friends hosted a party for her birthday on Saturday. I had never
been to her new house, but my friend Danielle called me and told me the
intersection that it was at, and said it was the white house with the
red door and shutters with cars in front of it and all the porch lights
on. “We’re in the basement,” she told me. “Just come on in!” I walked
up to the house that fit the description. Corner, white house, red
shutters, lights, cars. Check. I didn’t hear very much noise but I
figured it was because everyone was in the basement, so I opened the
door… and saw a middle aged man and his dog. I was definitely not at
the right house!! Fortunately, the guy was very nice about it, and
through my profuse apologies for bursting into his house, kindly
directed me to my friend’s home across the street, which was in fact
two houses in, and not on the corner. In other news, I will never call Danielle for directions again. Oh, and knocking might help.
5. Indianapolis cuisine
Our
cafeteria food here at Butler is pretty good as far as cafeterias go,
but sometimes you just have to get off campus. Fortunately, I am in
love with all of the local restaurants. They are so delicious that I
miss them whenever I go back home. This weekend, after a summer of
separation, I finally got to have my all-time favorite indulgence:
chili cheese ettouffe from Yats, Butler students’ (and most of Indy’s)
favorite Cajun place. It’s cheap, it’s fast and it’s amazing. I commend
myself on surviving a whole summer without it.
6. Bonding time
I
live in a sorority house that is normally teeming with girls; this
weekend, there were only about ten of us! However, it was really nice,
because things have been so crazy since we all moved in that we hadn’t
had much of a chance to hang out with each other and get to know our
new housemates a little better. All the free time this weekend was the
perfect opportunity: after an outing to see Harry Potter at the IMAX theatre, lots of grocery shopping at Target and Meijer and a night in with pizza and Dirty Dancing, the ten of us feel much more at home with each other.
7. Relaxing environment for homework
Homework
is still homework, but at least the weather was beautiful. If I have to
get tons of reading done, I’m definitely going to be multitasking and
laying out on the Mall in the sun!
