I am so Not feeling Global Warming Right Now!

I was so excited about getting to go back home for break. You know the usual is always great seeing my family, friends, and most importantly the 80 degree temperatures! Unfortunately only two out of three of those were very consistent this Thanksgiving break. It was warm for two days, and then it was cold. Maybe not Indianapolis cold but 59 degrees on Thanksgiving is cold on the Gulf Coast!

Other than the weather, it was great to be home and see my family and friends! Thanksgiving really spoiled me for my dad's home cooking. It's just not the same eating at Atherton these past few days. Good thing I have training to keep me focused for these next few weeks. Just because season is over doesn't mean that it's over for us. It just means we don't get to play volleyball that much, now we get to run, lift, run, jump train, and oh did I mention run? Ha ha ha

Oh well, like I said, it keeps me focused. After this week I can work out on my own until January so that will be nice. Our team, both tennis, and golf teams have teamed up to adopt a family for Christmas this year. It's one of the big community service projects the whole athletic department does. We're supposed to go shopping for the family next week so that should be exciting! Service is a big part of the values Butler stands for. What are some community service projects ya'll do?

My New Love!

Well with the semester and volleyball season coming to a close end I've been finding myself a bit more stressed than the norm. I remembered last semester's stress week events that the health and counseling center put on. One of their tips to keep stress from building up is to find a hobby for enjoyment that you can do often. That gave me an idea to find a new love in my life.

Now there will always be a place in my heart for the usually, family, God, friends, and of course volleyball. Recently I've decided to take my love of music a little deeper. I've decided that I'm going to learn how to play the guitar and the piano. I know that sounds a little ambitious, but I think it will be fun to have something to work on in my free time. I'm permanently attached to my headphones, and always have a good song stuck in my head it makes perfect sense.

I got it at the guitar center for a pretty decent price and then I went over to Seitu's room so he could tune it for me. He might have written something about it on his blog. You should go check it out. He's always up to something crazy and always tells me about how he likes blogging all of his adventures.

Great ideas like this one make me want to reward myself. I think I'll go and get a chai tea egg nog latte from Starbucks. I'll make sure to keep everyone posted on my musical progress. I mean it shouldn't be too hard. There is a reason my name is Melody!! lol

I'm so excited about this weekend, because my dad is coming up to see me!!! I don't get to see him or the rest of my family that much so I get really excited. It's even better that we have a game this Sunday, so he gets to see me play too!! I can't wait till he gets here tonight. I've planned a really fun weekend so he can see all the fun I get to have at Butler!! We're going to the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) on Saturday. I might try and working in some shopping lol . I still haven't thought of anything else that we can do, but I know we'll think of something. I'm so excited that I can't wait to see him when the team gets back from the Valparaso game tonight!! That reminds me I better hurray up and get to Hinkle.

Surprise Surprise!!

This week is the reading break before midterms, and usually the team is away traveling for conference. This weekend we're in Cleveland, Ohio to defeat Cleveland State and Youngstown. We also did a little contest of pumpkin decorating. Everyone decorated a pumpkin of someone else on the team, and the rest of the team had to guess who it was. It was a lot of fun decorating a pumpkin that looked like our setter, but the winner was one of our outsides who had yours truly! I can't wait until I get pictures up of it. It really looks great!!

That wasn't the end of our fun. Our coaches surprised us with tickets to the Cavaliers and Pistons game! We had so much fun watching the game (and drooling over Lebron James )it was one of those big surprises that our coach likes to do for us. It really lets us know that she appreciates our hard work and time.

This weekend starts the second round of conference and it's a really important one for Horizon League volleyball. If we win both games we can really change our standings in the league. We've really improved and made some changes, so hopefully tonight it will pay off. I better hurray up and head to the conference room to go over the game plan tonight. In Memoriam....

It amazes me when life can take you. This time two years ago I never imaged what would happen. It was on this day at 10a.m. I left my home not realizing that it would be a month before I would get to walk through it's doors again.

It doesn't feel like it happened to me two years ago. I still remember it like yesterday. Katrina destroyed New Orleans August 19, 2005. When the waters finally drained, it was as if the soul of the city went with them. Since then I've never felt at home in the only city I had ever known.

As I'm sitting here in my room at Butler I think about one of the alumni on the volleyball team. She was sitting in another room in Resco (maybe even the same one as me), and called me a few days after Katrina to ask me what address she can mail some cloths she wanted to give me. It was that phone call that I knew I picked a school with heart. Her kindness let me know that Butler must be a really special place to have someone as kind as her to help me out.

She had never met me, she wasn't even going to be playing with me next fall, but she knew I was part of the Butler family. Even though I wasn't in class with her, she still saw me as a bulldog in need.

That's one of the things I love about this campus. The spirit of kindness and generosity is everywhere. There is always someone who is willing to help someone else with anything. My professors are always understanding of my traveling schedule with volleyball, my friends and I study together for our exams, and the girl at Starbucks always puts a little extra whipped cream on my latte just because she knows it will make me smile.

The sense of community I get here has really helped me get through this day....

I'll never forget that little piece of me that was lost two years ago, but at the same time I'm so grateful for what I've found.
