    Re: Foreign Language Suggestions

Actually, neither JCFA or CBA majors have to take foreign language classes in order to graduate from Butler...currently only those students majoring in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and in Elementary Education are required to take a language.  I would say that currently, Spanish is the most popular language that folks are majoring or minoring in, but certainly French and even German are close behind.  We do offer a limited amount of Chinese, Italian, Greek, and Hebrew courses as well.  I hope this helps everyone!

    Hi Rupert -

I would suggest contacting our Learning Resource Center to get more info about this...they should be able to help you and are the office who arranges advisors/advisees.  The LRC'S phone number is 317-940-9308.

    Hope this helps!

So does anyone know about sign language? I was told I could take it if I wanted to, and I was wondering if anyone else has heard about it.

I bet you could take some electives in the communication disorders major if you wanted to!

There was a sign language class by my MBA class in Summer I session, with a sign on the door that said 'no talking once you enter the room'.  It was there every night, even the first one.  Must be a pretty neat experience!

Can you tell me what the foreign language requirement is for Elementary Education? If I took 4 years of French in highschool, will I need to take more for Elemntary Education?

    Re: Foreign Language Suggestions

You will be good to go with 4 years of a foreign language in high school.  Admission requires 2 years.

Just to clarify - when I said you'll be good to go with 4 years, I was speaking of admission to the University.  You will need to take 1 year of Spanish (or compentecy of fluency) to graduate with an Elem Ed degree.

    Re: Foreign Language Suggestions

    Hi Katie!

I checked on this requirement and wanted to follow-up with you, to clarify the elementary education Spanish requirement.  Here is what I found out:

"We just approved a different requirement than before- it is now a cultural competency requirement that can be filled through many different options as follows:

Students must demonstrate cultural competency in ONE of the following ways:

    A. Foreign language proficiency at the 203 level or above.

    B. Study abroad for a minimum of 3 hours of semester credit

    C. Equivalency of 2 semesters of sign language

    D. One ENL course (for those pursuing reading licensure, or by permission of the instructor)

    E. 3 hours of a relevant independent study, as approved by the program faculty.

So her placement test would very likely place her out of this requirement OR she could continue to study her french."

Let me know if this makes sense; contrary to what I previously mentioned it appears that you COULD continue to study French here and have that count towards your requirement.

    Have a good one!
