Hmmn, I don't recall having to write a personal statement....  I just remember completing the required essay, which was pretty reasonable.

    Re: Applying and Scholarships?

The way I approached my personal statement for all of my applications was to talk about things about which I am passionate, how they have shaped me, and how I have used them to shape my community and those around me.  The statement topic is, I think, less important than your ability to communicate effectively about something that clearly means a lot to you.  Though I know I shouldn't speak for the admissions readers, I'm fairly certain that they don't look at the topic and judge the validity of the essay based on that.  That being said, pick something you care about, know about, and that you feel shows a lot about you.

If you are able to articulate why something means a lot to you or can tell a great story that showcases your talents or can simply write a thought-filled essay about yourself so the admissions readers can make a better decision on you as a person rather than you as a high school GPA or a standardized test score, you will be fine.  Regardless of the topic!

Good luck and feel free to ask any more questions!
