I just applied to Butler and I'm hoping that if I'm accepted I'll be considered for departmental scholarships.  On my application I said that I plan to major in Elementary Education, so I'm guessing that means I'd be considered for a scholarship from the College of Education, right?  I was also wondering what would happen if I received the departmental scholarship but ended up changing my major later in college to something like Politcial Science... because that is a different department.  Any help is appreciated! :-)

Hey Veronica!

Thanks for your post.  Glad to hear that you have applied for admission to Butler, as an Elementary Ed major!!  Yes, you are eligible for departmental scholarship consideration, assuming that you meet the specific guidelines as outlined in the application...you'll know probably sometime in early January if you will be invited to participate in this interview program, which occurs in February.

If you participate and ARE awarded a departmental scholarship, understand that that money is tied to your major.  So if you later change to Political Science or any other non-education major you would likely lose any departmental money.  However, any freshmen academic scholarship money you might be awarded will stay with you regardless of what major you are (as long as you maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA).  And take heart, as the freshman awards are the most substantial scholarship dollars we give, and everyone who applies for admission is automatically considered for those as well.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
Cheers!

Thanks!  Your answer helped.  I figured that's how the scholarship thing worked.  Let's hope I don't decide to switch departments... haha.

I have general questions regarding scholarships...

What are the amounts of scholarships that are given out based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores? I got a 31 on my ACT and my GPA is currently a 3.985 so what kinds of scholarships could i receive for that?  I'm currently undecided about which program I'm going into but I'm leaning towards business/accounting or mathematics. So do I need to have a declared major to receive certain scholarships?

Thanks much!

Sarah

Here is some general info on scholarships at BU:

I would have to refer you to your admission counselor for specific $ value estimates.

It looks like your counselor is Clinton Bobb, e-mail: cbobb@butler.edu

I am from Ohio and I am considering applying to Butler. I know that Butler is a private school and  private schools usually give more money to make up for the extra cost of attendance, is this true for BU?

I also saw a scholarship with this criteria:

Awards are based on the student's academic record-SAT or ACT scores, class rank, high school curriculum and extracurricular involvement at the time of admission.

What gpa and act/sat scores is this referring to...is there a range?

or what do people who receive these awards usually have.

Welcome Jessbear14!! Great questions.

Yes, it's true we love to give away money. :)  85% of our students receive some sort of financial aid. And here's some more info on the ACT scores from BUMegan:

"Our middle 50% is 24-29 on the ACT. Keep in mind, though, that we pull the best four sub-scores on the ACT and combine them for you to create a new composite score. Does that make sense? If you've ever heard the term "superscore" that's also another way to describe it. It can actually help to take the test more than once, because your overall score MIGHT increase!

Also remember too, that Butler requires the writing score at least ONCE of all the times you've taken the test."

Here's the whole profile:

2008 Freshmen Class Profile (Middle 50%)
GPA (on a 4.0 scale): 3.42 - 4.0
SAT: writing 520-610; critical reading 520-630; math 530-650; composition 1570-1890
ACT: 24-29
48% in the top 10% of their graduating class

My biggest concern in applying to Butler is $$$$$$money$$$...aren't wer all concerned about that.

is there a ball park figure of what might be a typical cost of attendance...seeing as its a private schools and they usually find a way to get the cost down.

Thanks again!

Definitely a reasonable concern.  (shameless plug... don't forget about Butler's 96% success rate within 6 months of graduation.  What's a job after college worth to you? Cool)

It's hard to estimate because every student's situation is different.  Like I said above, 85% of students receive some form of financial aid. The best thing to do is apply (it's free online at http://go.butler.edu/apply) and see what happens.  Contact your Admission Counselor if you have specific questions that are more personal, rather than putting them here.  http://go.butler.edu/apps/counselorsearch

Keep your eye on Zinch.com and their $20,000 scholarship giveaway around the spring.  Last year it was based on a voting system.  I'd love to get an admitted Butler student in the running for that! :)

Are there merit based scholarships available to students with high ACT/SAT scores and GPAs?
