Since the website doesn't list minimum ACT or SAT scores, is there any recommendation of what I should try and get?

I'm taking the ACT, not the SAT.

I took the SAT, so I know just about nothing about the ACT. I also don't know the exact numbers known to the people in the admission's department, and I bet someone from admissions would be able to give you a better answer about specific scores. However, I did a little internet searching, and I found these statistics (I don't know how old they are, so they might not be perfectly accurate, so think of them more as a guide):

100% of freshmen had an ACT score over 18

83% of freshmen had an ACT score over 24

24% of freshmen had an ACT score over 30

Just for a bit of an admissions tip, I know the SAT / ACT seems like the most important thing when you're in high school. Just don't forget that your score (unless it's unbelievable) isn't going to separate you from everyone else. It's just a number, and it tells the admissions department almost nothing about you! Make sure you get involved in things you enjoy. It seems like everyone at Butler had a million extracurricular activities in high school. Leadership positions look great on your application...Butler wants to produce grads that can be leaders, and it helps if they know you have some potential! Great recommendations from your teachers are also a nice touch to make your application stand out. All in all, your ACT score probably won't make or break you. I know my SAT score wasn't stellar....it was definitely just average. I had to make my application stand out in other ways, and it worked!

Hope this helps you out!

I took both the SAT and the ACT, which isn't necessary really, but both of the tests are very different. Personally I liked the SAT better and performed well on it compared to my ACT scores. Just depends on what your strengths are. According to degreedriven.com, in Butler's entry class of 2006 the 25th percentile of students got a composite score of 25 and the 75th percentile received a score of 29. You will get so tired of hearing people talk about their test scores! I remember the end of junior year thats what the conversation revolved around and it got pretty tiring. My only advice is to give it your best. Take all the opportunities given to you. I highly recommend purchasing an ACT study guide. They make some that are computer programs and the Princeton Review workbooks are pretty good. If you just do a couple pages every day you will be doing yourself a great service. This sounds like a real "mom" thing to say, but get some rest the day before the test and eat a good breakfast so you aren't distracted by heavy eyelids or a grumbling stomach. I know you said that you are only taking the ACT, but if the chance arises it never hurts to take the SAT as well. It can only help your chances! Like Ashlen mentioned, don't forget that there are many factors that play into your admission and test scores are only a small part of this. Take AP classes, get involved, and take on leadership positions. Best of luck to you.

Hey alexns! Welcome to the BUForums.  Here is a quick look at the middle 50% of the student body who entered this year:

2008 Freshmen Class Profile (Middle 50%)
GPA (on a 4.0 scale): 3.42 - 4.0
SAT: writing 520-610; critical reading 520-630; math 530-650; composition 1570-1890
ACT: 24-29
48% in the top 10% of their graduating class

Thanks for your question, hope that clears things up.

To add on to what Brad said-our middle 50% is 24-29 on the ACT. Keep in mind, though, that we pull the best four sub-scores on the ACT and combine them for you to create a new composite score. Does that make sense? If you've ever heard the term "superscore" that's also another way to describe it. It can actually help to take the test more than once, because your overall score MIGHT increase!

Also remember too, that Butler requires the writing score at least ONCE of all the times you've taken the test.

Good luck! :)

Megan:

Does BU consider the optional writing portion in admissions? Thanks!

Thanks for all the help!

My school requires the ACT, but tries to make us take the SAT. Most people don't, but most people go to state schools, so I was wondering because of it being an out of state school. I have a few other out of state schools that I looked up, but they had no information.

Butler is definately my first choice! Yes

Gabbie-

We actually require the writing score at LEAST once. If you have more than one writing score, that's fine. We just want to make sure you have it! Does that make sense? Please let me know if you have further questions!

Yes, a 36. Always aim high! It is not impossible. In my high school class two people got a score of 35.
