ResCo (Residental college) is Air-Conditioned but it is primarily a sophomore dorm, having only one Freshman unit. Freshman can get into this unit if they have a medical need. (Air Conditioning makes things a lot easier on students with certain allergies)

However the two primarily Freshman dorms - Ross Hall (Co-ed) and Schwitzer (Women) are not air conditioned. This does make the first few weeks of school a little sweaty, but after that you really don't need it. Just bring a fan or two.

Haha....no, no they're not!  Residential College (ResCo) is, but certainly don't move in there just for the air conditioning.  It is a great place, but the two mainly freshmen dorms - Ross Hall and Schwitzer (all female) are way too much fun!!  Honestly, the whole no air conditioning thing is only terrible for about 2-3 weeks out of the year - typically right when you move in and possibly at the end of the school year.  Just bring a fan and don't use covers for a couple weeks and you'll be just fine!  It's actually a bonding thing because everyone gets to complain about the heat together!  Haha!

I totally agree with Allison about the bonding over complaining about the heat!  :)  It also makes it easier when we're all gross and sweaty together.  How sweet, right?  :)  But I can honestly say that there were probably only 3 unbearable days since I've been here, which I think isn't too bad, and it wasnt anything that you couldnt fix by doing your homework in a tank top and shorts in front of a fan.  :)  And this way, I appreciate air conditioning more now, and for some reason, I actually like the heat?  You start to get used to it after awhile... and I'm not really into the whole being cold thing anymore....lol

So, freshmen dorms are fun but are there good places to study in them too?  I love to socialize too but when I have work to do I like to really concentrate and get through it!  (And I'm guessing there's going to be alot of work in prepharm.)  Is it noisy in the evenings and are there any quiet study areas in the dorms?  Or is it better to just go to the library?  Hmm...the library is air conditioned, right?!  Is there any way to get paired up with another prepharm for a roommate?

Re: what are the dorms like

There are LOADS of good places at Butler to study. People often figure out what works best for them and stick with that most of the time. The library is air conditioned, and I really like studying there when I need to buckle down and get stuff done. When I'm just doing my day to day studying, I usually just stuck to my dorm (and now my apartment). The dorm usually doesn't get loud enough to be a problem. The noise level will depend on the people in your hall, though. I always found that putting headphones on a listening to music would allow me to block any distractions out. Between classes, I've become a fan of studying in the lounge in the basement of the pharmacy building. There are actually two libraries on campus - the Science Library and Irwin Library. A lot of people also like going into classrooms in Jordan Hall over the weekends to study. There are study rooms in the dorms - ResCo has two in each hall and there are some in the Schwitzer basement.

As for roommates, there is a whole form you fill out before coming freshman year, and I bet that you could request to be paired with another prepharm major. A lot of the time, prepharm majors get put together anyways, probably because their study habits are a lot alike!

    Hey Amy:

I sent you a pm but don't know if it worked or not.  Anyway, just wanted to say good luck with sr year (yea) and college apps (ugh)!  I'm applying for Fall 09 too, hopefully we'll both get in!
