May I just say that as a relatively new resident of Indy, I truly appreciate this subject....and I will most likely refer back to this thread in the near future...its oh so helpful.  :)

Thanks for the map, Brad.  Is the area around campus safe to walk through alone?  I was interested in public transport to see if there was a way to get to the ice rink in Indy without spending a fortune on taxis. I've been a competitve skater and would like to be able to skate a little while I'm in school!  Not sure if this is a popular activity with the general student pop. there, so I might be on my own (but always willing to teach a friend!).

It seems like a safe area to me, but I'm also only here from 8:30-5 most of the time.  I know campus is very safe and the police provide escort for free, but could any students chime in on the surrounding areas? (i.e. walking 46th Street from Meridian to campus)

    Re: Off campus

I feel safe during the day time, but the night is a completely different story. I would feel very uneasy walking anywhere around campus after dark - I've just heard of way too many crime reports. Part of my hesitation may be because I'm a female, but I don't think I'm the only person on campus to feel this way! I know the police escorts are available, but I've never used them and I don't know anyone else who has used them either. I'm willing to walk around campus in the evening if I'm in a group (larger the better), but otherwise I try to avoid it. As I said though, if you're planning on walking in the day time, I wouldn't be as concerned.
