I am a junior in high school and considering Butler to major in Dance Pedagogy. I would like information as to what the audition requires, and any preparation I could do to improve my dancing.

hi mollie!

to answer your question-the way our auditions work is this-each student that comes for the day-long audition process attends two technique classes, neither en pointe. You will have meetings with various faculty members in the department, as well as tours of the facilities in Lily, Clowes Hall and campus tours. More information can be found on their website, www.butler.edu/dance or this site specifically about auditions: http://www.butler.edu/dance/da_auditions.html

I hope this helps! :)

That definitely answered a lot of my questions! :) I have been taking dance classes for 14 years, but where I attend, we do not focus completely on classical ballet. That is one of my major concerns with the audition, because classical ballet is not my strong point. I take ballet technique, jazz, tap, lyrical, and pointe. Is this a problem?

Mollie

Butler's program consists of a wide variety of classes.  However, the audition is entirely classical ballet.  I would suggest focusing on your port de bras and picking up combinations quickly in preparation for the audition day.  The good thing about the audition is that it is on flat so no pointe required :)  Just be confident and even if you have no idea what you're doing or you forget a part of a combination pretend like you know what you're doing and SMILE!!! I mean not cheesy, but look alive haha.  , you'll do great!

no problem! I am not a dance major but I actually auditioned last year and was planning on going to dance school but then decided halfway through audition season it wasn't for me.  It was kinda scary because once I decided not to dance I didn't have any idea what I wanted to do...but things turned out great :)  where else are you auditioning?

Aww that's sad, but atleast it turned out okay : ) I'm not sure where else I want to audtion, because a lot of the schools I've seen don't have dance pedagogy, which is what I really want to do. I also want to go to a private school, so it doesn't give me much of an option haha. I might end up having to switch majors too, but I have no idea what else I would want to do.
