The company is only around on that Saturday (not Sunday) so be sure and find him that day. I don't have pricing information but you can give them a call at 317-848-5822 if you want to find out before coming to Butler. If you want to look for something before you arrive the room dimensions can be found in your housing packet or online at http://www.butler.edu/residence-life/housing-options/schwitzer-hall/room-diagram for Schwitzer or http://www.butler.edu/residence-life/housing-options/ross-hall/room-diagram for Ross.

I know our Office of Residence Life recommends a large rug or piece of carpet rather than trying for wall to wall carpet. First, it keeps you from having to trim it when you arrive if it's not quite the exact right size. Second, you don't have to move the furniture around while laying it. Third, it can be a pain when it 'walks' or slides a little leaving bumps and requiring you to move furniture again and again. So, it's usually best to buy a piece of carpet to put in the center of the room rather than trying to cut it the exact dimensions of the room.

There are other FAQ answers on the www.butler.edu/residence-life site as well.

There's also another thread about dorms that you should check out which includes a YouTube video of Schwitz: http://go.butler.edu/cs/forums/t/2439.aspx

Coley, in my opinion, the Butler dorm rooms are some of the biggest around! They were either comparable or bigger than every school I visited... especially state schools! University of Illinois and Michigan's dorms seemed like living in a closet to me, but Butler's are a really comfy size and have big beautiful windows, which I loved. Oh, and Schwitzer, the freshman women's dorm, has HUGE closets. Like, you can stand inside them and change, even if you have way too many clothes like me! : )

To answer the question about living on campus, if we are not commuting from a family member's home, we are required to live in on-campus housing for three years... however, this is not so bad because it includes the dorms but also the Apartment Village and University Terrace housing and Greek houses. In my opinion, on-campus housing is the best way to be close to all the on-campus action. I would have lived on campus for my first three years even if we didn't have the requirement.

Re: Question

Hey Nicole! So I'm studying abroad in Spain and missing Butler very much, so I totally went overboard with answering your questions, but hopefully you can find something helpful in the novel I wrote you ; )
What made you pick to go to BU?1. Location – Even now that we’re studying in Spain, living up the European culture, my Butler friends and I still talk about how much we love Indianapolis. It was very important to me to go to college in a city where there would be lots of culture, entertainment, sports, etc. both on and off campus. In addition to everything that’s going on campus, Indy definitely doesn’t disappoint – there are SO many great restaurants, bars and shops and fun theatres, concerts, cultural festivals, sporting events, etc. that make Indy an exciting place to live. (To name a few: Yats Cajun restaurant, Bazbeaux’s Pizza, the Music Mill - restaurant and concert venue, the Indy Fringe Festival, the Indianapolis International Film Festival, Fiesta Hispanic festival, political rallies like Barack Obama’s in May, the Big Ten basketball tournament, Bands of America Grand Nationals, the Penrod Arts Festival, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Broadway shows at the Murat … plus .all these events and more are easy to find out about with Nuvo, Indy’s free A&E magazine). I just love being right in the middle of all the action, and with campus only 15 minutes away from downtown Indy, that’s easy. I get all the benefits of college campus culture… PLUS everything the city has to offer.)We’re also in the state capital, and tons of business and non-profits are based in Indy, which makes it a great location for internships, volunteer opportunities, etc. Also, we’re within a few hours of Bloomington, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, St. Louis, etc. so it’s really easy to visit other friends and family you may have in the Midwest.2. Professors & staffFrom the first time I came here to visit, everyone at Butler, from the receptionist at the Admissions Office to the head of the English Department, was so friendly and helpful, and willing to do basically anything to make sure I had a good experience here. I could tell that they genuinely cared and would help me with whatever I needed to succeed, and that has continued to be my experience in the two years I’ve spent here as a student. I have close relationships with many of my professors – for example they often invite classes over for dinner, and if I have a question about ANYTHING, even not related to their class, they will spend hours talking with me and just giving good general life advice. I am in Spain right now with one of my professors, and she and her husband are practically our family. Maybe it’s just the Midwest-style, but everyone is so friendly, which brings me to my next point.3. We’re basically the Butler fam.Students at Butler are really friendly, and we KNOW each other. Yeah, there may not be the anonymity of a huge campus, but I like it that way because I really get to know the people who I live with, take classes with, am in clubs with, etc. I always feel at home whenever I am at Butler because there is always a smiling face around of someone who knows me and will say hello and see how I’m doing. Even, when I came to Butler as a prospective, I stayed with two people I didn’t know and they were so welcoming and included me in on the campus fun right away. To me, Butler really is like a family you love to come home to.4. Academic ScholarshipsMy education is almost free thanks to several academic scholarships I receive from Butler. Obviously this isn’t something that can be offered to every student, but compared to some private institutions which don’t give ANY merit based scholarships, I think Butler has really great financial opportunities.5. Entertainment on campusI am a Liberal Arts and Sciences major, but another reason I chose Butler was for our amazing College of Fine Arts. I love dance, music and theatre, and we have outstanding programs in all three that have great student productions all year long. Clowes Hall, the theatre on campus, also hosts tons of concerts and events like Broadway shows, the opera, comedians, dance companies, rock bands, etc…. all of which are literally down the street from your dorm at Butler (and you get a student discount!)
What is your favorite thing about living on campus? I love the busy busy busy campus life! There is always something going on, more than I could ever possibly do. If you like sports, there is nothing like Butler basketball in Hinkle Fieldhouse! If you like movies, or coffeehouse concerts, or games or all-night dance marathons, Student Government always has something planned for you. Greek houses have cookouts and philanthropy events like tournaments or lip-sync contests almost every weekend, and these events are open to the whole campus. I mentioned above all the cool things that happen at Clowes, but there are also tons of other smaller cultural events such as lectures, films, etc. Residence Life and Greek houses will also plan plenty of activities to do with your neighbors. We also have a ton of student organizations, and most people are very involved. I have been involved with a sorority, the Student Foundation, Basketball Band, yearbook, the literary magazine, Ballroom Dance Club, Environmental Concerns Organization, College Democrats, College Mentors for Kids, Student Government and a music fraternity, and all of these clubs have even more fun events and opportunities that really make it impossible to get bored.
What is your least favorite thing about living on campus?

Hard to say, because I love living on campus. I guess I would have to say that I wish it was easier to get off campus without a car. You can have one as a freshmen, and many people do, so it is never too difficult to get a ride from someone if you don’t have one… but lots of cars just means parking on campus can be tricky. Did you have any problems with your roommate? We had a few small disagreements (as anyone would), but overall it was pretty smooth. At the beginning of the year, the RAs have you fill out a roommate contract where you and your roomie set up rules for the room such as: when and how often is it okay to have visitors and how far in advance do we need to warn each other? or How often are we going to clean up? When are we going to have quiet study hours? This solves a lot of problems right away, but the biggest way to avoid problems with your roommate is just be honest and talk to them about your needs!
What are some good thing to get into at BU? Whatever you’re interested in! Chances are, there is something that fits what you like to do… or something new you want to give a try. You can check out our Student Organizations here. I agree with Ashlen that Dawg Pound and SGA are very popular and a good place to start. Greek Life can also be very fun and rewarding. If you are into community service, College Mentors for Kids is a very popular club where you are paired with a buddy from Indianapolis Public Schools who comes to visit you once a week on campus. We also have some popular religious groups, such as Campus Crusade for Christ. Hmm, Dance Marathon and Relay for Life are big philanthropy groups that many people get involved with as well! But really, you will have the most fulfilling experience at college if you just explore your own interests. Go to Block Party during the first week and shop around! All the clubs have email listservs you can sign up for which will let you know about upcoming events and how to get involved, and we have a daily email digest for the whole campus with general announcements of activities and opportunities.

It's a new policy that came into effect after the Apartment Village was built a couple of years ago to make sure that those apartments were filled. I'll be honest, even Butler students were outraged when the policy was first announced. I can tell that you're pretty set on not wanting to live on campus, but let me give you this food for thought: getting involved as a transfer is more difficult than it is as a freshman, and living on campus could be a great way to make the adjustment a bit easier. But, if you're still set on living off campus, here are the "loopholes" that I know of:

- If you are over the age of 21 at the start of the school year, the university cannot make you live on campus.
- If your immediately family (parents or siblings over the age of 21) have a residence somewhere in or near Indianapolis, you can use that as your official residence, even if you're planning on living elsewhere in the city. I've heard of people saying that they're "commuting" from as far away as Lafayette. This might still work if your parents own the place where you plan on living, even if it's not their primary residence. - Check your credit hours. There are plenty of people at Butler that are considered a year ahead of what they really are (based on their incoming year) due to the number of credit hours they've taken. If you can transfer in enough credit hours to be considered a senior, it can be your ticket off campus.- Are you in a Greek fraternity? If you are, and we have a chapter at Butler, look into living in the house. Greek housing is still considered on-campus living. Granted, you'll still be living with "strangers" but you might have the option of a single room. Plus, I'm sure all of the fraternities on campus would be great at helping out a brother adjust to life at Butler. If these options don't work for you, but you still want to come to Butler, maybe look into living in ResCo. ResCo (Residential College) is generally filled with sophomores, but is open to all upperclassmen. I know there are quite a few single rooms available in ResCo, and you would only have to share your bathroom with one other person. Also, all the rooms in the Apartment Village (which you would be eligible to live in as a junior) are singles, but you would share a bathroom with one other person and your living area / kitchen with three other people. Granted, it's still living with strangers, but at least you have the privacy of your own room. One last option would be UT (University Terrace). I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that there are single apartments available (bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, all to yourself). If we can help you out with anything else, let us know.

So did you guys that are for sure coming to Butler already turn in your housing info? Ask any questions to current students here (dorms, the closet size, what to bring, etc.) OR just tell us where you're living and share your res hall pride. (GO SCHWITZ! haha)

I just answered some question about the FLLCs and the dorms in another part of the forum, so check it out!

always people around to hang out with!

easy to meet new people

random funny times (especially when you just wander the hallways)

fun programming and free events - movie nights, sports event parties, Indy outings, service projects

an RA to answer all your questions

people to watch tv with (Grey's Anatomy parties....anyone??)

people to carpool with

people to eat lunch with

proximity to the main part of campus (like... less than 2 minutes away from most classes or the union)

common areas that you can use (Schwitzer has two lounges, (one with a tv, ping pong, etc., the other with a piano) & a workout room... Ross has a room with a big screen tv and a game room)

kitchen access, study rooms, computer labs and laundry rooms

the list goes on...

Worst things about living in a dorm...

common bathrooms? doesn't bother me, but it takes getting used to for some people

sharing a room? also didn't bother me, but you have to be willing to compromise

you have to be concious of how loud you are during "quiet hours" (after 10 pm on weeknights, I think)

no visitors after 2 am during the week (this can be annoying if you have an out-of-town guest during the week, but it's not very strictly enforced in my experience, and it's mostly there to protect you from having a roommate with a live-in significant other.)

Ross can get kinda loud on weekend nights (Schwitzer is almost always quiet and study friendly!)

Ross has boys in it. Sometimes boys smell.

(Okay, obviously I lived in Schwitzer so I'm totally biased... the guys and girls who live in Ross love it! literally... they all have shirts that say "Ross Love!")

And yes, Kayleigh, lots of people do live in apartments. University Terrace is a smaller apt. building that will be mostly sophomores next year, and pretty much all the juniors who are not Greek live in the Apartment Village complex, which overlooks our football field and is right near Hinkle Fieldhouse and the Health & Recreation Center. Also, everyone in the Apt. Village gets their own bedroom, so that's pretty sweet!

Our residence life is pretty awesome! I am friends with many of the RAs and they are way cool; our rooms are bigger than the average school's dorms, and you can get a lot of free fun times out of living in a dorm. It's so much fun and one of the best parts of college life, so get excited!!

Anything I didn't cover?

Re: FLLC

Hey everyone! I lived in a FLLC unit in Schwitzer last year and it was good times. It's not really a big commitment, so don't let that deter you from applying. Basically it just means that you have a closer connection to the faculty-in-residence in your building. For me, that was a music professor and her husband who lived in the apartment in Schwitz. She would plan some events for us like going to the opera, or out to dinner in Broad Ripple, and I think we did a service project too. The FLLC units also get more money to put on events and programming, buy tickets to events at Butler and around Indy, etc. so that's pretty sweet - you should definitely apply!!

(Also, I think 2/3 of them in Schwitzer are on the first floor... definite bonus when you're moving in!)
