I don't want to purchase a meal plan, but can I still get Dawg Bucks or Flex Dollars on a card, so I don't have to carry cash around? If so, will I use my Student ID to purchase food, or will I have a separate card? Also, what is the difference between Dawg Bucks and Flex Dollars?

Re: Help Needed for a prospective student

I agree with Stephanie's suggestions... those are the best delivery options. However, the most popular restaurants that people go together late at night are probably Qdoba, Noodles & Co (both in Broad Ripple or downtown) and Steak and Shake (tons of Indy locations) so she could use those as well for getting off campus sometimes. Cool gift idea!

Re: Meal Plans

I believe the cost is the same no matter which plan you choose (that's just from my memory of freshman year... correct me if I am wrong!!) and it is just the balance between meals and flex dollars which varies. The more meals you get, the less flex dollars you will have. The other thing to note is that according to the Dining Services website, the 180 block meal plan is not available to first years, which I'm guessing is your status.

Anyway, I'm surprised that it doesn't give specifics about how many flex dollars come with each plan in that contract. Maybe try poking around the website I linked to above or Student Affairs and see what you can find.

Oh, and YAY for Butler next fall : ) I'm glad you're joining us. let us know if you have other questions!

This is a question I asked pretty much everyone I know at Butler last year when I was editor of the yearbook and we did a "Butler Traditions" page. Here's what we came up with:

Fountain jumping - This is the number one Butler tradition, in my opinion! Groups of friends run around Butler's campus and jump into every fountain (and of course, photo document it!). The ultimate fountain jumpers make it in every single fountain... even the one in the library : )

Campus golf - Bring your golf clubs to school, because Butler students love to "golf" around campus with tennis balls. "Holes" are popular spots on campus such a star fountain, the observatory, etc.

Soapy Star Fountain - Star Fountain is in the center of campus on the mall... not only is it part of the epic fountain jumping experience, but it tends to be the site for practical jokes. During finals week in the spring someone always pours soap in it so it bubbles over with suds. Always good for a laugh… or even a bath. I jumped in last year on a whim with some friends – the walk home was a bit sticky! haha.
Blue II's Birthday – Our mascot, Blue II is a real live bulldog so last year we started the tradition of a campus-wide birthday party for him. The birthday dog hangs out in Starbucks to take pictures with everyone and play games and there are free cupcakes for all.

Lawn decorations for Homecoming – I don’t know if other campuses do this, but I had never heard of it before I came to college… for Homecoming Week, we have a lawn decorating contest to go with the Homecoming theme. All the Greek houses and residence halls participate and decorate the sorority houses – but you would not believe how intense these lawn decs are! My freshman year, Delta Gamma covered the entire front side of their house with a tarp. Last year Theta had a school bus parked in their driveway… it gets serious! Anyway, I think it’s a really fun tradition because the night before the competition, everyone is out on the lawns decorating until like 3 or 4 am, kind of like a massive decorating party… even if you’re not helping, it’s a great time to walk down Hampton Drive and check out all the action.

Midnight Snack – probably my favorite Butler tradition, and it happens twice a year! During Homecoming and Snowcoming Week, SGA brings in tons and tons of fast food – Qdoba, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Duncan Donuts, pizza, etc. and at midnight everyone RUNS into the Reilly Room and grabs as much food as possible.

Geneva Stunts & Spring Sing – These are two musical extravaganzas/competitions where Greek houses and residence halls pair together to put on musical skits. There is always a theme – for example, I think last year’s was Back to the Future. Anyway, the participants sing and dance, but all the lyrics are rewritten to be about Butler… so it’s basically all about making fun of ourselves. Bring on the campus inside jokes : )

Sledding on C Club trays in the Butler Bowl - Snow days are one of the greatest things to ever happen at college, because even if you’re snowed in, all your friends are right there. Our football stadium is bowl-shaped, so one of the wintertime traditions is to go sledding down the hill. However, being college students, we don’t really have sleds sitting around our dorm rooms… so we have to get creative. Not that I’m advocating this, but a popular sled choice appears to be borrowed trays from the cafeteria ; )

Drive-In movie – During Welcome Week, SGA shows a popular movie out on the Mall (our big grassy area in the center of campus) and everyone brings their blankets and snacks and enjoys movie night.

Playfair – This is only for freshman, but one of my favorites. Playfair is an activity that travels around to different college campuses, and it always comes to Butler during Welcome Week right before the start of classes. It’s hard to explain but it’s basically all these crazy group games that the whole freshman class plays together. It involves running around and yelling and holding hands and all this chaos. It is impossible to go to Playfair and not meet new people! The joke is always that you will meet your future husband or wife there.

VooDoo – Annual Halloween party sponsored by Sigma Nu, one of the fraternities. The guys go all out decorating their house and people sometimes wait in line for over an hour to get in!

Greek philanthropy events – Greeks sponsor lots of fun annual philanthropy events that we look forward to every year. They almost always involve a cookout to raise money, and then free entertainment like sports tournaments, women’s lipsyncs or men doing cheerleading or synchronized swimming haha (blogger JoeW LOVES to do this… check out his videos.)

Humans vs. Zombies – I think Liz wrote about this in her blog already, but I’ll mention it here too. This tradition was around my freshman year, banned last year and appears to have made its resurgence. It is a campus-wide game that anyone can join. If you’ve ever played Assassins, it’s kind of like that. I don’t remember all the rules, but the basic idea is that there are humans and zombies roaming campus (marked by bandanas) and they are both trying to defeat the other side…. you attack by hitting someone with a nerf dart, rolled up sock or a marshmallow (not kidding). It’s not dangerous by nature, but it was banned last year because the administration didn’t think it was safe. I guess this year the restrictions are that you can’t play in the dorms or academic buildings. I have never played but it’s always fun to see people creeping around corners talking about zombies.

Rowdy Row – This is only a Greek tradition, but a memorable sight on campus even if you’re not participating. Our Greek formal recruitment takes place at the end of Winter Break, right before classes start up. On the last Sunday of break, all the new members get their bid cards and find out what house they are in. They run out onto Hampton Drive (usually screaming) where their new Greek families are cheering and waiting to greet them. The street is closed off for the afternoon, and it’s basically a big Greek party in the streets with everyone hugging and taking photos and catching up with all their friends from other houses.

Camping out for skydiving – Every year, SGA’s Out & About in Indy committee sponsors a very cheap skydiving trip. It is very popular, but there are limited spots that are given away on a first-come, first-serve basis. So, the night before the sign-ups, people always camp out in the student union in front of the activities office.

Basketball – Loving basketball is probably the oldest Butler tradition and one that is still strong today. This IS Indiana, after all.

Also, they’ve already been mentioned, but Relay for Life and Spring Sports Spectacular are both fantastic. And Dominick the Donkey is just hilarious… there’s nothing like Christmas-time at Butler to make you smile.

Lately I have been hearing a lot about how important it is for us to be receiving healthy nutrition from food. Last night I attended the Woods Lecture by Michael Pollan, author of novels such as "The Omnivore’s Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food." He gave humorous but beneficial “rules” to navigate the food system such as “Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother would not recognize as food.”

His speech made me think of my own nutrition and re-think whether or not the food I am eating here at Butler is healthy. Looking back on experiences had with the meal items here along with research, the answer is "no."

The majority of Butler students have the opportunity to eat in three dining halls: the Marketplace at Atherton Union, Residential College dining room and C-Club.

My basic dining routine consists of lunch at Resco and dinner at Atherton during the week, with breakfast at Resco when I have early classes. If I miss the Atherton dinner hours I will eat at C-Club but the menu consists of the same things every day, plus everything there begins to taste the same after awhile.

Lately, my friends and I have had less-than-pleasant experiences with the food, specifically the food offered in Atherton. In the past month we have encountered a loose hair or two in both the pasta and the ice cream, moldy bread that the employees failed to remove after being informed of it and over-ripe fruit. We also cannot forget the broccoli that contained mold or the macaroni and cheese that contained an interesting white substance.

I have also been informed of foreign objects being found in Butler food -- pencil lead in ice cream and a plastic cap from the end of an icing tube in a cup of chocolate pudding. And just when you think that it cannot get any worse, my friend put honey mustard dressing on his salad at lunch last week only to find that the dressing was rancid. The last thing we need here is food poisoning.

There is much more to this than unpleasant-tasting food here. The weekly menus are available on www.campusdish.com along with the so-called nutrition facts. A simple glance at several items proved that the food here is anything but nutritious. Take beef ravioli, a common favorite -- a serving alone contains 455 calories and an astounding 929 milligrams of sodium!

In order to burn off the calories from one serving, and I know for a fact that I sometimes eat more than the serving size, one would need to exercise for about 40 minutes on the elliptical at the HRC or run about three miles on the track.

You would think that at a school where we pay up to $40,000 per year to attend we would have healthy, tasteful food.

I believe the food here is anything but healthy. In fact, I think the safest thing to eat would be a piece of fruit, but then again it may be spoiled! Although there are somewhat healthier alternatives such as a build your own sandwich and a salad bar, one cannot live off of this food for the entire time at Butler.

If we want to maintain good nutrition throughout the school year something needs to be done in order to create a healthier dining experience for all.

Is this article a fair summary of the dining services at Butler? What have been your experiences with Aramark, good or bad? How would you rate Aramark on customer service, cleanliness, pricing, etc.?

We're the most over-programmed campus in America!!" What he means by that is that there is ALWAYS something going on at Butler, and our biggest problem is usually deciding what NOT to do.

I think the reason that we have so much going on at Butler is that almost everybody is involved in clubs and other extracurricular activities (usually more than one!) and these groups sponsor lots of events - some just for members, but lots that are open to the whole campus. We also have a really fantastic Student Government Association that puts on tons of free events like movies every Friday and Saturday night and Java Jams concerts in Starbucks every Wednesday.

One thing that I like about Butler's social life is that because we're a smaller school, we have lots of all-campus events that a huge percentage of the student body comes to. For example, during Welcome Week we have the Drive-in movie, where there is a massive blow-up screen on the mall and everyone brings blankets and watches a movie outside together. Some other big events are Dance Marathon (an all night dance party that raises money for Riley Children's Hospital), Spring Sports Spectacular (campus-wide all night party where you can compete in all sorts of events from basketball to ping pong to Catchphrase - and there's tons of free food!), Relay for Life (American Cancer Society fundraiser where teams take turns walking around the track in Hinkle all night.) Homecoming is also very popular and has lots of fun games and contests and our favorite event - Midnight Snack, aka as much free fast food as you can carry! haha now that I'm talking about all these events, it seems that we really like to stay up late and eat at Butler! I think that's true for most college kids. We also have two major concerts on campus each year. Past performers have included Ben Folds, The Fray, Jason Mraz, Better than Ezra, and Ok Go. There are also lots of dances/parties that different clubs will sponsor in our student union building like Swing Night, Salsa Night, Back to School Party and the Residence Halls host All Hall Fall Ball off-campus.

The party scene is different for everybody - some people prefer to go to the official events that I talked about above, others like to just hang out in dorm rooms or apartments. As far as big parties go, there are six fraternities with houses on campus, so they tend to host a lot of parties. Every Friday and Saturday night there will be a party at least at a few of these houses and these are pretty popular. There are usually one or two theme parties per weekend that draw the really big crowds - examples are the Voodoo Halloween party (which both Seitu and I wrote about in our blogs), Black & White, Red Light/Green Light, Ugly Christmas Sweaters and Highlighter Night. Basically, college students love an excuse to dress up! These parties are pretty much all open to the whole campus, but if you join a fraternity or sorority they will also have their own private parties sometimes. Of course, there are plenty of parties that don't involve Greek life at all - some of my friends who live in the Apartment Village or have their own off-campus houses host parties all the time. Some are themed, some aren't, but some recent favorites have been a Toga Party (with a cover charge that raised money for the American Cancer Society! party for a cause...) and a 1920's theme - gangsters, flappers and private eye detectives.

A typical weekend for me (minus the boring parts of homework, laundry and cleaning!) might include a basketball game, game night or a movie with my roomates or in somebody's dorm room, hanging out on the front porch of the frat house across the street from my house just chatting with friends and meeting new people, attending a concert or a play on campus (these are happening all the time and they're always amazing!),and always a Steak n Shake run. Actually, the late night food is the only thing that's really constant... other than that, every weekend at Butler is different.

I hope that helps to give you a better idea about our campus life - I wrote so much and yet I still feel like I'm leaving so much out of what goes on, because there are tons of other events or random things that we do for fun, like explore Indianapolis, or wander around campus talking to random people, or jump in the Star Fountain on the Mall! There is definitely a huge variety of things to do, no matter what your style is. Whether you like parties or not, I have no doubt that you'd have a fun time at Butler.

I think Brad is right - the best way to learn more about what really goes on is to read our blogs!

Re: What's the food like?

We have two dining halls at Butler. One is called Atherton Marketplace and that's open for lunch and dinner and also breakfast on the weekends. That's in our student union. Resco, the dorm where most of the sophomores live, has it's own dining hall that's open for breakfast and lunch.

I like Atherton because it's close to all my classes and it has a pretty wide variety of food. At every meal there is a homestyle line which is like pasta, meat, vegetables (kind of like home cooking), a fast food style line (french fries, burritos, chicken nuggets), a wrap bar (all kind of wraps and sandwiches with meat and veggies), a salad bar, a pasta/stir-fry bar where you choose all the ingredients, and - of course - pizza and lots of desserts.(the freshmen 15 temptation!)

I wouldn't lie to you and say all the food at A-town (as we like to call it) is great, but there was always something that I wanted to eat. The wrap & sandwich bar was new second semester last year and it is AMAZING. They had this great sandwich with grilled chicken and pesto on flatbread...mmmm. It's almost as good as Panera Bread.

We also have C Club which is on the lower level of Atherton Union. It has a sandwich shop, grill, ice/cream smoothie place and a Noble Roman's Pizza, as well as packaged salads, wraps, sandwiches, fruit & veggies and even sushi that you can just grab and go. I would say the sandwich part is the most popular because they have fantastic quesadillas that everyone loves and they also make hot sandwiches - kind of like Quiznos. However, if I'm up for something a little less healthy, I absolutely love the spicy chicken sandwiches from the grill.

The great thing about C Club is that is open even after the dining halls close and we have a program called Meal Exchange from 4:00-9:30 pm, where you can get a combo meal at C Club instead of eating at one of the dining halls. This is extremely popular, and it's nice because it gives you more variety to your meal options.

So, overall I give Butler's food a 7.5/10. I mean, it is college food, but there's always something to eat, a huge variety and for the most part it's pretty tasty.

I'm sure some of the other bloggers might want to chime in, but let us know if you have any more questions!
