Guys live on the first and second floors and the basement of Ross Hall. There are also lounges, a kitchen, a computer lab and laundry facilities in the basement which both male and female residents can use.

Other items you might want to bring include a shower caddy, laundry supplies, a fan, a tv, desk lamps, posters, storage crates and anything else that will make you feel more at home. Hey everyone! lots of questions about dorm rooms right now... which makes sense. It is where you have to live, after all! I have a ton of pics from when I lived in Schwitzer freshman year so I will post those soon. Coley, in my opinion, the Butler dorm rooms are some of the biggest around! They were either comparable or bigger than every school I visited... especially state schools! University of Illinois and Michigan's dorms seemed like living in a closet to me, but Butler's are a really comfy size and have big beautiful windows, which I loved. Oh, and Schwitzer, the freshman women's dorm, has HUGE closets. Like, you can stand inside them and change, even if you have way too many clothes like me! : )

To answer the question about living on campus, if we are not commuting from a family member's home, we are required to live in on-campus housing for three years... however, this is not so bad because it includes the dorms but also the Apartment Village and University Terrace housing and Greek houses. In my opinion, on-campus housing is the best way to be close to all the on-campus action. I would have lived on campus for my first three years even if we didn't have the requirement.

My home is just north of Kessler and west of Meridian Sts. 1600SF w/attached 2 car garage. I'm looking for a roommate for the school year so through May, 09 only. Got bit by the IRS in a BIG way this year and it eases my financial situation until summer, 09.

What you need to know if considering:

Male, so another male is probably going to work better than a female. It is what it is.
Home is in good shape and clean. You'll be in a good space.
2nd bedroom is already furnished but I can empty in lieu of your own.
Everything else remains in home so no move in of other furniture. But you'll be free to take advantage of current furnishings throughout.
I own a cat and a parrot. the parrot can be "vocal" in the AM..., natural for her breed.
$ 500/month and 1/2 utilities. You'll likely be in the $675-$750 range each month

The living situtation is different for each exchange program. For mine, I got a room in the dorms, eventhough there was no rule that I had to.I figured it'd be better, easier to meet people, etc. Since my the school is small (600 people tops) the dorms here are a good mix of everything from first years to post-grads from all over. Another friend who is studying here in London has a very different situtation. She is living in a dorm that was set up for her program, so all americans. Yet another friend who is in Japan right now is living with a host family.

So lots of options for housing, but the big thing to do is to ask the programs when you're looking at where you want to go. While it's good to be around lots of different people, having an american or two hanging around is a good thing. They get your pop-culture references, they like peanut butter, and most importantly they're going though the same stuff you're going through.

Hey! So did you guys that are for sure coming to Butler already turn in your housing info? Ask any questions to current students here (dorms, the closet size, what to bring, etc.) OR just tell us where you're living and share your res hall pride. (GO SCHWITZ! haha)

Best things about living in a dorm:

always people around to hang out with!
easy to meet new people
random funny times (especially when you just wander the hallways)
fun programming and free events - movie nights, sports event parties, Indy outings, service projects
an RA to answer all your questions
people to watch tv with (Grey's Anatomy parties....anyone??)
people to carpool with
people to eat lunch with
proximity to the main part of campus (like... less than 2 minutes away from most classes or the union)
common areas that you can use (Schwitzer has two lounges, (one with a tv, ping pong, etc., the other with a piano) & a workout room... Ross has a room with a big screen tv and a game room)
kitchen access, study rooms, computer labs and laundry rooms
the list goes on...

Worst things about living in a dorm...

common bathrooms? doesn't bother me, but it takes getting used to for some people
sharing a room? also didn't bother me, but you have to be willing to compromise
you have to be concious of how loud you are during "quiet hours" (after 10 pm on weeknights, I think)
no visitors after 2 am during the week (this can be annoying if you have an out-of-town guest during the week, but it's not very strictly enforced in my experience, and it's mostly there to protect you from having a roommate with a live-in significant other.)
Ross can get kinda loud on weekend nights (Schwitzer is almost always quiet and study friendly!)
Ross has boys in it. Sometimes boys smell.

(Okay, obviously I lived in Schwitzer so I'm totally biased... the guys and girls who live in Ross love it! literally... they all have shirts that say "Ross Love!")

And yes, Kayleigh, lots of people do live in apartments. University Terrace is a smaller apt. building that will be mostly sophomores next year, and pretty much all the juniors who are not Greek live in the Apartment Village complex, which overlooks our football field and is right near Hinkle Fieldhouse and the Health & Recreation Center. Also, everyone in the Apt. Village gets their own bedroom, so that's pretty sweet!

Our residence life is pretty awesome! I am friends with many of the RAs and they are way cool; our rooms are bigger than the average school's dorms, and you can get a lot of free fun times out of living in a dorm. It's so much fun and one of the best parts of college life, so get excited!!

Hey Bob -

I actually did see a sorority while I was a senior in HS, because when I came to visit my host was Greek and she took me over to see her house. So, if you know or meet someone on campus who is Greek, they would probably be willing to give you a tour. However, open houses don't really happen until you are actually a student here.

Another option is to check out the Greek organizations websites - these usually have pictures of the house, sometimes like a virtual tour kind of thing, and they will also give other information about the chapter that you might be curious about.

If you are just curious about Greek life, this might be a good thing to do, but try not to develop opinions about specific chapters before you come here - you'll get the most out of your experience at Butler if you come in with an open mind!
