Guys live on the first and second floors and the basement of Ross Hall. There are also lounges, a kitchen, a computer lab and laundry facilities in the basement which both male and female residents can use.

During move in on Saturday, Aug 22th there will be carpet available for sale. The company is only around on that Saturday (not Sunday) so be sure and find him that day. I don't have pricing information but you can give them a call at 317-848-5822 if you want to find out before coming to Butler. I know our Office of Residence Life recommends a large rug or piece of carpet rather than trying for wall to wall carpet. First, it keeps you from having to trim it when you arrive if it's not quite the exact right size. Second, you don't have to move the furniture around while laying it. Third, it can be a pain when it 'walks' or slides a little leaving bumps and requiring you to move furniture again and again. So, it's usually best to buy a piece of carpet to put in the center of the room rather than trying to cut it the exact dimensions of the room.

Best part about Ross Hall? The basketball court right outside! I was strolling around campus last spring and these guys were playing ball, so I took some shots. This pic is also in our new viewbook!

I was a Schwitzer girl too, so I don't have the insider scoop either, but every guy I know really enjoyed living in Ross. That's why you'll still find a significant number of guys deciding to live there during their sophomore year. Both of the freshman dorms have an unofficial "open doors" policy. It's a really social place, there's a lot of video game playing and it's a great place to watch any sort of sporting event on TV. My fiance lived there his freshman year, and he thought it was a good time. His only complaint was that the showers didn't always work well, and that sometimes you would have to wait to use the showers. He really liked the games room in the basement....ping pong and foosball are always popular.

Yes you are correct, Ross Hall is where the first year student guys live. Ross is very fun. There are both sophomores and freshman living in Ross, because it is for first year students, but it is primarily freshman. I live in Schwitzer, so I can't give you an insider account or anything, but I have a bunch of friends over in Ross. The rooms are about the same size as they are in my dorm, but the closets are much smaller. It has a lovely odor that only comes with multiple boys living together as well. Its not air conditioned so fans are definetly necessary. Theres no carpeting on the floors in either of the residence halls, so most people get big area rugs. The showers in Ross are pretty small, and there is no "middle area" between the shower and actual bathroom area. For example, in Schwitz theres a middle area between two shower curtains with a little bench where you can set your shower bag and hang up your robe and towels. Then you can dry off there when you're down showering. However, in Ross you have to dry off in the actual shower part and set your stuff right outside the shower. Not a big deal, just not so convenient. The guys live on the first two floors and all the girls live on the third. The guys rooms are doubles and triples. On the girls floor they have a really nice study/meeting room with rolly chairs and stuff. Some people also live in the basement. In addition the basement area has a rec room, with pool tables and couches. Hm well thats everything I know about Ross! Hope that helps a little :)

Hey, I'm not in the pharmacy program (I'm a junior English major), but I'll try to answer as many of your questions as possible.

Community bathrooms are not bad at all. I lived in Schwitzer Hall and they were very clean and the RAs in that building decorate them so they were actually quite cute and homey. I cannot speak for the boy's bathrooms in Ross Hall, but they get the same cleaning services that Schwitzer does so I would imagine they are fine, too. Resco, another residence hall we have, is suite-style, meaning there is a bathroom in between every two rooms. Do you live very far away? It would be great to do a campus visit sometime if you can.

There is a ton to do at Butler - way more than I can fit in my schedule, in fact. Our campus is the center for lots of cultural life in Indy because we have the fabulous Clowes Hall that has great performances like the Indianapolis opera and symphony and traveling Broadway shows, and Butler's student government brings in musical acts such as Ok Go, Ben Folds, Better than Ezra, The Fray, etc. The Butler fine arts performances are outstanding, too. We also have lots of visiting writers and other speakers. As far as fun things to do, Student Government has lots of big campus events. If you're interested in sports, downtown may have the Colts and the Pacers - but WE have Butler Basketball in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, which is way more exciting, in my opinion.

If you're interested in off-campus fun, downtown is an option, but we're actually really close to one of the most popular neighborhoods in Indy, called Broad Ripple. It has tons of restaurants, bars and small shops and is about 7 minutes away from campus. We are also pretty close to the malls on the North side (which are way better than the shopping downtown). Oh, and how could I forget?? We are across the street from the Indianapolis Art Museum which is FREE and amazing. Beautiful gardens and really cool exhibits.

The campus is pretty small and very easily walkable (15 minutes from one corner to the other). I consider this a major bonus, because as a freshman I could literally get to class in 60 seconds and Starbucks in about the same. Now I live a very far 5 minutes away from these things ; )

I think the reason we offer so many majors is that we're a liberal arts school where students are encouraged to explore lots of different interests. Many people choose to add a minor (or several) or double major. Yes, some programs have a smaller number of students, but that just means those departments are close knit. One example is anthropology - because they are smaller, the students are all really good friends, and they know their professors VERY well; one of the professors hosts parties for the whole department at her house. So, a small department can mean really great access to and attention from professors. However, not all departments are that small. Pharmacy, while obviously very selective, is one of the bigger majors at Butler from what I can tell.

That's all I've got for now... I'll let someone who knows more about the pharmacy program answer those questions, but I hope this helps! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. We love to talk about Butler!

Hey,

1) All of the dorms have computer labs (Schwitzer, Ross, Resco). I am not positive about the Apt. Village - they might have one in the Dawg House, which is like the central building over there where they have laundry facilities and a convenience store and other stuff.

2) I think the standard answer is no, but I know some people have fish.

3) Bed, desk, dresser, trash can and curtains.

4) Nope, Schiwitzer and Ross do not have air conditioning. Resco does, though.

5) Bathrooms are communal for Ross and Schwitzer, and suite style (one for every two rooms) in Resco.

Dorm Situation!

So if any current Butler students can answer this question that would be great! I know this is still far away for me but I plan far in advance. What suggestions do you have on what to bring on move-in day? How much of certain things? How much clothes? 1 suitcase full or more? What did you find that you brought that you really didn't need? What kind of video game stystems would you reccomend to bring? would you reccomend carpet? Would you suggest to bunk beds or no? And anything else you can think of?

Best things about living in a dorm:

always people around to hang out with!
easy to meet new people
random funny times (especially when you just wander the hallways)
fun programming and free events - movie nights, sports event parties, Indy outings, service projects
an RA to answer all your questions
people to watch tv with (Grey's Anatomy parties....anyone??)
people to carpool with
people to eat lunch with
proximity to the main part of campus (like... less than 2 minutes away from most classes or the union)
common areas that you can use (Schwitzer has two lounges, (one with a tv, ping pong, etc., the other with a piano) & a workout room... Ross has a room with a big screen tv and a game room)
kitchen access, study rooms, computer labs and laundry rooms
the list goes on...

Worst things about living in a dorm...

common bathrooms? doesn't bother me, but it takes getting used to for some people
sharing a room? also didn't bother me, but you have to be willing to compromise
you have to be concious of how loud you are during "quiet hours" (after 10 pm on weeknights, I think)
no visitors after 2 am during the week (this can be annoying if you have an out-of-town guest during the week, but it's not very strictly enforced in my experience, and it's mostly there to protect you from having a roommate with a live-in significant other.)
Ross can get kinda loud on weekend nights (Schwitzer is almost always quiet and study friendly!)
Ross has boys in it. Sometimes boys smell.

(Okay, obviously I lived in Schwitzer so I'm totally biased... the guys and girls who live in Ross love it! literally... they all have shirts that say "Ross Love!")

And yes, Kayleigh, lots of people do live in apartments. University Terrace is a smaller apt. building that will be mostly sophomores next year, and pretty much all the juniors who are not Greek live in the Apartment Village complex, which overlooks our football field and is right near Hinkle Fieldhouse and the Health & Recreation Center. Also, everyone in the Apt. Village gets their own bedroom, so that's pretty sweet!

Our residence life is pretty awesome! I am friends with many of the RAs and they are way cool; our rooms are bigger than the average school's dorms, and you can get a lot of free fun times out of living in a dorm. It's so much fun and one of the best parts of college life, so get excited!!
