Hi!I am going to be a student athlete at Butler but I also wanted to consider being in a sorority....would be it to overwhelming to be in a sorority and be in a sport?? -Callie

Hey Callie! Seitu is right that you have to consider the other time factors in your schedule, but I know there are lots of Butler athletes who are in sororities. We have had several members of the golf team in my house, and we currently have two swimmers. Our chapter president (a huge job) is also the captain of the lacrosse team, which is a club sport, but still a big time commitment, so it is definitely possible. At Butler, we don't have formal recruitment for sororities until second semester, so you would have time to adjust to college and know more about your schedule before committing to a sorority.

Class of 2013 ENewsletter

I don't think we have a ton of programs for high school students, but there are a few:

Sports camps (not all for HS, but some are): http://www.butlersports.com/camps/butl-camps.html

English Department's Creative Writing Camp: http://www.butler.edu/english/index.aspx?pg=4621

Our dance program offers summer opportunities through their affiliate school, Jordan Academy of Dance: http://www.butler.edu/jcad/welcome.html

The music school has a similar program called the Butler Community Arts School: http://www.butler.edu/JCFA/community_arts.htm.

I am not sure about others, but they may exist, so hopefully other BU students and staff can chime in... was there a specific area you were interested in? I could investigate if you let me know!

Re: Are sports a "huge deal" at Butler?

Basketball is definitely the biggest sport at Butler and one we are very proud of and get very excited about!

Our men's team has been in the NCAA March Madness tournament for the last two years (we played Florida in the Sweet Sixteen in 2007) and we are also the reigning Horizon League Champions (there are way more achievements that I could list - if you're interested, read about them here: http://butlersports.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/041408aab.html).

The games are very popular and really fun events that brings the campus together. Dawg Pound, our student spirit section, is the biggest club on campus (and blogger Jake is the president, if you want to hear more about it).

That said, one of the things we are most proud of is that our athletes are REAL Butler students getting a college education. Last year, if you took the March Madness bracket and compared GPAs of all the teams, then we won the tournament : ) I had Spanish class with Drew Streicher (one of our best players from the class of 2008) my freshman year, and the prof treated him like any other student. I didn't even know he was on the basketball team untill halfway through the semester!! (I was always like "Wow, that kid is tall..." and yet I didn't figure it out hahaha). Drew graduated with a 3.95 GPA and is now in med school at IU.

Whenever we celebrate the athletic achievements of the team, their academic success is something that is almost always mentioned along with it.

I say all this to get back to the original question... yes, sports are important at Butler and like any good Indiana school, we LOVE our basketball... but I don't think it overshadows what we are really here for, which is a quality education.

Re: What all can we do on/off campus during our freetime?

Hey! I just wanted to add my two cents because I am from the Chicago area and it is one of my all-time favorite cities… and yet I ADORE Indy and don’t think I would want to be anywhere else for college. I think of Indy as the cheaper, more homey, friendly, accessible, up-and-coming trendy city that I love to come home to every time school starts up.Let me expand a bit on these ideas:CHEAPER: Let’s face it, Chicago is EXPENSIVE, and that is no good for the college student budget L Almost everything is cheaper in Indy… you can actually find free parking on the street downtown or you can park in the mall lot for like $3 (try finding that price ANYwhere in Chicago). Museums here are cheaper, or like the fantastic Indy Art Museum (right down the street from BU), FREE J. Concert tickets are cheaper. Food tends to be cheaper. Gas is cheaper. Need I go on?MORE HOMEY: Indy has the urban feel, but the people are not rude or impersonal like you can sometimes get in a big city. People are very friendly and share a camaraderie just for being part of our community. For example, I went out to dinner at a restaurant downtown for my 18th, and when they found out it was my birthday, the staff not only sang to me, but assembled me a birthday gift wrapped in their flyers. People are just kind and welcoming like that. People in Indy are also very familiar with Butler and think very highly of it, so they will immediately love you if they find out you are a BU student. Seriously, when I go to the grocery store wearing a Butler t-shirt, I always have random people stop to talk to me about how great our academics are or how much they love watching the basketball team. Oh, and the city is FULL of our alumni and friends of Butler who come together to support our university… it’s cool to have that family atmosphere and feel like this is OUR city and they’ve got our back JACCESSIBLE: They are not 2 million people living in Indianapolis, so things are not so competitive and hectic as they are in a big city. Like I mentioned above, BU students already have the advantage in this city, and I think the ratio of college students to businesses, non-profits and government officials headquartered in this town is definitely in our favor. Internship and job opportunities are always abundant around here, and employers know and love to work with BU students and grads. Indy is also accessible in terms of entertainment and free time… it’s not super-crowded so you can usually find a place to park downtown (as long as it’s not a Colts game day!) and tickets to events like rock concerts are easier to get then they would be in a massive city like Chicago. (We are also really close to Bloomington, where IU’s campus draws a lot of cheap concerts if you’re interested in that.) TRENDY: Indy’s cultural scene is already lots of fun and developing more and more each year. Like Joe mentioned above, Broad Ripple is very trendy, tons of fun, and very close to our campus. There are also several other cultural districts in Indy including Mass Ave, which is another very trendy area East of downtown with restaurants, shopping, art galleries and theatre, and Fountain Square which is similar but with fun additions like a swing dancing club and duck-pin bowling. The city is also investing a ton of money right now into the new Cultural Trail which will be a bike and pedestrian trail that connects all these cultural districts to the Monon Trail and has new public art along the way. (I am WAY excited about this!) Indy is also developing it’s “indy-pendent” art scene… meaning you will find Indy bands, art, and original theatre here (I recommend the Phoenix theatre!). Indy is home to more than one film festival (and a really cool independent film theatre), the Penrod Arts fair, and lots of neat cultural festivals like Fiesta, the Irish Festival, the French market, etc. Expanding the cultural scene and tourist attractions is a big priority for the city right now, so you know that there is definitely even more excitement to come in the next few years.(I added another one…)BEAUTIFUL: Okay, the actual city is no more pretty than Chicago, but the neighborhood that Butler is situated in on the North side is GORGEOUS! Meridian Street, which is blocks away from our campus, is lined with historic mansions and the whole neighborhood is full of gigantic trees that make it green and beautiful. It is a residential neighborhood, and a very short distance away from the urban environment. I love that we can be so close to downtown and yet still have the feel of our own college campus. Not many urban schools can offer that!!So… that’s what makes Indy special. In many ways we are just like Chicago… we have very popular professional sports teams, a symphony, multiple theatre companies, concert tours, museums, historical monuments and all the shopping and restaurants you could think of. Tons of conventions and national sporting events come to use our great facilities like the new Lucas Oil Stadium. We think it’s a pretty great place to be.BUT, after all this, if you really are craving some authentic Lou Malnati’s pizza, Michigan Avenue, or a Cubs game… you can catch a MegaBus from downtown Indy and be at Union Station in Chicago in about three hours for as cheap as $1. I should also note, my response is only focused on what there is to do OFF-campus. On-campus life is so busy and fun that you could easily stay in “the Butler Bubble” for the entire semester without leaving… but I don’t recommend this because, hey! You’ve got all the resources of a fantastic city (as Joe said, the 12th biggest in the nation) right here at your doorstep JIf you have any questions, let me know! I always enjoy chatting about my lovely city and school.

Obviously, Chicago will have a lot to do as well, but one thing that I like about Indy over Chicago is that Chicago has that big city feel, while Indy has a lot of the advantages of being in a city but you can easily get away from the urban feel.

I don't even know where to begin with on campus activities. A lot of what you decide to do will depend on the organizations you join. There are always a million things to do on the weekends, and most things are free (big plus). Right now, football games on Saturday are popular - later this year it will be basketball. Butler students get into all athletic events for free, and basketball games are AMAZING - by far the best entertainment in the entire city! There are also free movies put on by the student government association every Friday and Saturday night. When the weather is warm, sometimes they put up a big projector on the mall and have a "drive in" movie (we all sit on the grass). The movies are ones that are out of theaters but generally aren't on DVD yet. Last weekend was "Wanted" and they showed "Get Smart" earlier this year. The Greek system also puts on a lot of popular events around campus, often to raise money for charities. Sarah and Joe both have a lot of posts / videos on their blogs, so check it out! As I said before, a lot of my "free" time is taken up with activities for my organization. Next weekend I'm heading to Ohio / Kentucky with my pharmacy fraternity for a big conference. When we're on campus, we sometimes have picnics in Holcomb Gardens (we love to play cornhole and have water balloon fights), or we go to sporting events together (a group went to an Indians Game earlier this year). Butler also sends out a daily e-mail to all students called the "News Digest" where organizations will give announcements about upcoming events on campus.

Indianapolis has a lot of great sports teams, and the awesome thing about them is that tickets are reasonably priced. Last year I went to a Pacers / Bulls game for $15 - the student government association's program board picked up part of the ticket price. I've also been able to go to three Colts games, and I know that tickets to the Indians games are really reasonably priced. If you're into the arts, the IMA is literally just down the street from Butler, and I think that students get in for a discounted price. There are also theatres downtown as well as the ISA (Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra). I know that professors for some classes will utilize these resources and have students attend events - sometimes as an assignment, or sometimes for extra credit. Broad Ripple is an area about 10 minutes from campus where a lot of students go to hang out - there are a lot of restaurants and a few shops. There's a place called Kiln Creations where you can paint your own pottery and it's a lot of fun! Of course we have some really good malls, and there are movie theaters too....basically anything you would expect to find in a city.

I'm a Senior and I still haven't finished exploring Indy - I really want to go check out a lot of the monuments downtown sometime! I've seen most of them from a distance, but I haven't seen them up close.

One more thing - Butler gets a lot of cool concerts, and tickets for students are cheap (think $5 to $10). Ben Folds came to campus my freshman year, and The Fray opened for him. I heard Gavin DeGraw had come for Exam Jam the year before I came to Butler. Last year I went to go see Ok Go (the band that did the really cool treadmill video).

The last awesome thing about the area is that other cities aren't that far away. Even Chicago is only a three hour drive - a lot of students drive up there for the weekend if there's something they really want to do (like a concert or sporting event). Cincinnati is close (2 hours) and you can get to St. Louis in about three hours.

Re: General Questions

Hey, I'm not in the pharmacy program (I'm a junior English major), but I'll try to answer as many of your questions as possible.

Community bathrooms are not bad at all. I lived in Schwitzer Hall and they were very clean and the RAs in that building decorate them so they were actually quite cute and homey. I cannot speak for the boy's bathrooms in Ross Hall, but they get the same cleaning services that Schwitzer does so I would imagine they are fine, too. Resco, another residence hall we have, is suite-style, meaning there is a bathroom in between every two rooms. Do you live very far away? It would be great to do a campus visit sometime if you can.

There is a ton to do at Butler - way more than I can fit in my schedule, in fact. Our campus is the center for lots of cultural life in Indy because we have the fabulous Clowes Hall that has great performances like the Indianapolis opera and symphony and traveling Broadway shows, and Butler's student government brings in musical acts such as Ok Go, Ben Folds, Better than Ezra, The Fray, etc. The Butler fine arts performances are outstanding, too. We also have lots of visiting writers and other speakers. As far as fun things to do, Student Government has lots of big campus events. If you're interested in sports, downtown may have the Colts and the Pacers - but WE have Butler Basketball in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, which is way more exciting, in my opinion.

If you're interested in off-campus fun, downtown is an option, but we're actually really close to one of the most popular neighborhoods in Indy, called Broad Ripple. It has tons of restaurants, bars and small shops and is about 7 minutes away from campus. We are also pretty close to the malls on the North side (which are way better than the shopping downtown). Oh, and how could I forget?? We are across the street from the Indianapolis Art Museum which is FREE and amazing. Beautiful gardens and really cool exhibits.

The campus is pretty small and very easily walkable (15 minutes from one corner to the other). I consider this a major bonus, because as a freshman I could literally get to class in 60 seconds and Starbucks in about the same. Now I live a very far 5 minutes away from these things ; )

I think the reason we offer so many majors is that we're a liberal arts school where students are encouraged to explore lots of different interests. Many people choose to add a minor (or several) or double major. Yes, some programs have a smaller number of students, but that just means those departments are close knit. One example is anthropology - because they are smaller, the students are all really good friends, and they know their professors VERY well; one of the professors hosts parties for the whole department at her house. So, a small department can mean really great access to and attention from professors. However, not all departments are that small. Pharmacy, while obviously very selective, is one of the bigger majors at Butler from what I can tell.

That's all I've got for now... I'll let someone who knows more about the pharmacy program answer those questions, but I hope this helps! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. We love to talk about Butler!

Do you Twitter?

If you're a Twitter...er?, then feel free to follow http://twitter.com/butlersports, where you can get the latest of all sports news at Butler!
