Well, I'm not a theatre major but I am pretty familiar with the fine arts school and know a few theatre kids. I don't think you can really major in technical theatre. However, when you come in as a theatre performance major you are required to take tech classes and serve on the tech crew for a certain number of performances. You take classes on lighting, set, costume design etc. So even though its not considered a major per se, you are still learning about the technical aspect of it and it will prepare you for that sort of career if you decide thats what you would rather do.

Hey! I just wanted to add my two cents because I am from the Chicago area and it is one of my all-time favorite cities… and yet I ADORE Indy and don’t think I would want to be anywhere else for college. I think of Indy as the cheaper, more homey, friendly, accessible, up-and-coming trendy city that I love to come home to every time school starts up.Let me expand a bit on these ideas:CHEAPER: Let’s face it, Chicago is EXPENSIVE, and that is no good for the college student budget L Almost everything is cheaper in Indy… you can actually find free parking on the street downtown or you can park in the mall lot for like $3 (try finding that price ANYwhere in Chicago). Museums here are cheaper, or like the fantastic Indy Art Museum (right down the street from BU), FREE J. Concert tickets are cheaper. Food tends to be cheaper. Gas is cheaper. Need I go on?MORE HOMEY: Indy has the urban feel, but the people are not rude or impersonal like you can sometimes get in a big city. People are very friendly and share a camaraderie just for being part of our community. For example, I went out to dinner at a restaurant downtown for my 18^th, and when they found out it was my birthday, the staff not only sang to me, but assembled me a birthday gift wrapped in their flyers. People are just kind and welcoming like that. People in Indy are also very familiar with Butler and think very highly of it, so they will immediately love you if they find out you are a BU student. Seriously, when I go to the grocery store wearing a Butler t-shirt, I always have random people stop to talk to me about how great our academics are or how much they love watching the basketball team. Oh, and the city is FULL of our alumni and friends of Butler who come together to support our university… it’s cool to have that family atmosphere and feel like this is OUR city and they’ve got our back JACCESSIBLE: They are not 2 million people living in Indianapolis, so things are not so competitive and hectic as they are in a big city. Like I mentioned above, BU students already have the advantage in this city, and I think the ratio of college students to businesses, non-profits and government officials headquartered in this town is definitely in our favor. Internship and job opportunities are always abundant around here, and employers know and love to work with BU students and grads. Indy is also accessible in terms of entertainment and free time… it’s not super-crowded so you can usually find a place to park downtown (as long as it’s not a Colts game day!) and tickets to events like rock concerts are easier to get then they would be in a massive city like Chicago. (We are also really close to Bloomington, where IU’s campus draws a lot of cheap concerts if you’re interested in that.) TRENDY: Indy’s cultural scene is already lots of fun and developing more and more each year. Like Joe mentioned above, Broad Ripple is very trendy, tons of fun, and very close to our campus. There are also several other cultural districts in Indy including Mass Ave, which is another very trendy area East of downtown with restaurants, shopping, art galleries and theatre, and Fountain Square which is similar but with fun additions like a swing dancing club and duck-pin bowling. The city is also investing a ton of money right now into the new Cultural Trail which will be a bike and pedestrian trail that connects all these cultural districts to the Monon Trail and has new public art along the way. (I am WAY excited about this!) Indy is also developing it’s “indy-pendent” art scene… meaning you will find Indy bands, art, and original theatre here (I recommend the Phoenix theatre!). Indy is home to more than one film festival (and a really cool independent film theatre), the Penrod Arts fair, and lots of neat cultural festivals like Fiesta, the Irish Festival, the French market, etc. Expanding the cultural scene and tourist attractions is a big priority for the city right now, so you know that there is definitely even more excitement to come in the next few years.(I added another one…)BEAUTIFUL: Okay, the actual city is no more pretty than Chicago, but the neighborhood that Butler is situated in on the North side is GORGEOUS! Meridian Street, which is blocks away from our campus, is lined with historic mansions and the whole neighborhood is full of gigantic trees that make it green and beautiful. It is a residential neighborhood, and a very short distance away from the urban environment. I love that we can be so close to downtown and yet still have the feel of our own college campus. Not many urban schools can offer that!!So… that’s what makes Indy special. In many ways we are just like Chicago… we have very popular professional sports teams, a symphony, multiple theatre companies, concert tours, museums, historical monuments and all the shopping and restaurants you could think of. Tons of conventions and national sporting events come to use our great facilities like the new Lucas Oil Stadium. We think it’s a pretty great place to be.BUT, after all this, if you really are craving some authentic Lou Malnati’s pizza, Michigan Avenue, or a Cubs game… you can catch a MegaBus from downtown Indy and be at Union Station in Chicago in about three hours for as cheap as $1. I should also note, my response is only focused on what there is to do OFF-campus. On-campus life is so busy and fun that you could easily stay in “the Butler Bubble” for the entire semester without leaving… but I don’t recommend this because, hey! You’ve got all the resources of a fantastic city (as Joe said, the 12^th biggest in the nation) right here at your doorstep JIf you have any questions, let me know! I always enjoy chatting about my lovely city and school.

I know a few people in the theatre program and they love it from what they tell me! The audition process is pretty much like any other theatre program, but once you are in you are competing against every other theatre majors, not just freshman. You can immediately begin auditioning for their big shows. They just performed Phaedre this weekend, for example, and one of my friends auditioned for it, made callbacks, but didn't get a part. I think it was mostly upperclassman that received roles for Phaedre, but underclassman have just as much of a chance. As for acceptance criteria, you pretty much just have to have theatre experience and talent. Your admission relies mostly on your audition. My roommate actually auditioned for the program and made it, but decided against it to go into education. However, it is possible to major in theatre and get a teaching certificate at the same time, so then if you really just want to teach or you want a fallback plan you have education available. I can get you an email of a theatre major if you have specific questions, just let me know :)

There is SO much to do on campus and around Indy. Obviously, Chicago will have a lot to do as well, but one thing that I like about Indy over Chicago is that Chicago has that big city feel, while Indy has a lot of the advantages of being in a city but you can easily get away from the urban feel.

I don't even know where to begin with on campus activities. A lot of what you decide to do will depend on the organizations you join. There are always a million things to do on the weekends, and most things are free (big plus). Right now, football games on Saturday are popular - later this year it will be basketball. Butler students get into all athletic events for free, and basketball games are AMAZING - by far the best entertainment in the entire city! There are also free movies put on by the student government association every Friday and Saturday night. When the weather is warm, sometimes they put up a big projector on the mall and have a "drive in" movie (we all sit on the grass). The movies are ones that are out of theaters but generally aren't on DVD yet. Last weekend was "Wanted" and they showed "Get Smart" earlier this year. The Greek system also puts on a lot of popular events around campus, often to raise money for charities. Sarah and Joe both have a lot of posts / videos on their blogs, so check it out! As I said before, a lot of my "free" time is taken up with activities for my organization. Next weekend I'm heading to Ohio / Kentucky with my pharmacy fraternity for a big conference. When we're on campus, we sometimes have picnics in Holcomb Gardens (we love to play cornhole and have water balloon fights), or we go to sporting events together (a group went to an Indians Game earlier this year). Butler also sends out a daily e-mail to all students called the "News Digest" where organizations will give announcements about upcoming events on campus.

Indianapolis has a lot of great sports teams, and the awesome thing about them is that tickets are reasonably priced. Last year I went to a Pacers / Bulls game for $15 - the student government association's program board picked up part of the ticket price. I've also been able to go to three Colts games, and I know that tickets to the Indians games are really reasonably priced. If you're into the arts, the IMA is literally just down the street from Butler, and I think that students get in for a discounted price. There are also theatres downtown as well as the ISA (Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra). I know that professors for some classes will utilize these resources and have students attend events - sometimes as an assignment, or sometimes for extra credit. Broad Ripple is an area about 10 minutes from campus where a lot of students go to hang out - there are a lot of restaurants and a few shops. There's a place called Kiln Creations where you can paint your own pottery and it's a lot of fun! Of course we have some really good malls, and there are movie theaters too....basically anything you would expect to find in a city.

I'm a Senior and I still haven't finished exploring Indy - I really want to go check out a lot of the monuments downtown sometime! I've seen most of them from a distance, but I haven't seen them up close.

One more thing - Butler gets a lot of cool concerts, and tickets for students are cheap (think $5 to $10). Ben Folds came to campus my freshman year, and The Fray opened for him. I heard Gavin DeGraw had come for Exam Jam the year before I came to Butler. Last year I went to go see Ok Go (the band that did the really cool treadmill video).

The last awesome thing about the area is that other cities aren't that far away. Even Chicago is only a three hour drive - a lot of students drive up there for the weekend if there's something they really want to do (like a concert or sporting event). Cincinnati is close (2 hours) and you can get to St. Louis in about three hours.

Hey Nicole! So I'm studying abroad in Spain and missing Butler very much, so I totally went overboard with answering your questions, but hopefully you can find something helpful in the novel I wrote you ; )

What made you pick to go to BU?1. Location – Even now that we’re studying in Spain, living up the European culture, my Butler friends and I still talk about how much we love Indianapolis. It was very important to me to go to college in a city where there would be lots of culture, entertainment, sports, etc. both on and off campus. In addition to everything that’s going on campus, Indy definitely doesn’t disappoint – there are SO many great restaurants, bars and shops and fun theatres, concerts, cultural festivals, sporting events, etc. that make Indy an exciting place to live. (To name a few: Yats Cajun restaurant, Bazbeaux’s Pizza, the Music Mill - restaurant and concert venue, the Indy Fringe Festival, the Indianapolis International Film Festival, Fiesta Hispanic festival, political rallies like Barack Obama’s in May, the Big Ten basketball tournament, Bands of America Grand Nationals, the Penrod Arts Festival, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Broadway shows at the Murat … plus .all these events and more are easy to find out about with Nuvo, Indy’s free A&E magazine). I just love being right in the middle of all the action, and with campus only 15 minutes away from downtown Indy, that’s easy. I get all the benefits of college campus culture… PLUS everything the city has to offer.)We’re also in the state capital, and tons of business and non-profits are based in Indy, which makes it a great location for internships, volunteer opportunities, etc. Also, we’re within a few hours of Bloomington, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, St. Louis, etc. so it’s really easy to visit other friends and family you may have in the Midwest.2. Professors & staffFrom the first time I came here to visit, everyone at Butler, from the receptionist at the Admissions Office to the head of the English Department, was so friendly and helpful, and willing to do basically anything to make sure I had a good experience here. I could tell that they genuinely cared and would help me with whatever I needed to succeed, and that has continued to be my experience in the two years I’ve spent here as a student. I have close relationships with many of my professors – for example they often invite classes over for dinner, and if I have a question about ANYTHING, even not related to their class, they will spend hours talking with me and just giving good general life advice. I am in Spain right now with one of my professors, and she and her husband are practically our family. Maybe it’s just the Midwest-style, but everyone is so friendly, which brings me to my next point.3. We’re basically the Butler fam.Students at Butler are really friendly, and we KNOW each other. Yeah, there may not be the anonymity of a huge campus, but I like it that way because I really get to know the people who I live with, take classes with, am in clubs with, etc. I always feel at home whenever I am at Butler because there is always a smiling face around of someone who knows me and will say hello and see how I’m doing. Even, when I came to Butler as a prospective, I stayed with two people I didn’t know and they were so welcoming and included me in on the campus fun right away. To me, Butler really is like a family you love to come home to.4. Academic ScholarshipsMy education is almost free thanks to several academic scholarships I receive from Butler. Obviously this isn’t something that can be offered to every student, but compared to some private institutions which don’t give ANY merit based scholarships, I think Butler has really great financial opportunities.5. Entertainment on campusI am a Liberal Arts and Sciences major, but another reason I chose Butler was for our amazing College of Fine Arts. I love dance, music and theatre, and we have outstanding programs in all three that have great student productions all year long. Clowes Hall, the theatre on campus, also hosts tons of concerts and events like Broadway shows, the opera, comedians, dance companies, rock bands, etc…. all of which are literally down the street from your dorm at Butler (and you get a student discount!)
What is your favorite thing about living on campus? I love the busy busy busy campus life! There is always something going on, more than I could ever possibly do. If you like sports, there is nothing like Butler basketball in Hinkle Fieldhouse! If you like movies, or coffeehouse concerts, or games or all-night dance marathons, Student Government always has something planned for you. Greek houses have cookouts and philanthropy events like tournaments or lip-sync contests almost every weekend, and these events are open to the whole campus. I mentioned above all the cool things that happen at Clowes, but there are also tons of other smaller cultural events such as lectures, films, etc. Residence Life and Greek houses will also plan plenty of activities to do with your neighbors. We also have a ton of student organizations, and most people are very involved. I have been involved with a sorority, the Student Foundation, Basketball Band, yearbook, the literary magazine, Ballroom Dance Club, Environmental Concerns Organization, College Democrats, College Mentors for Kids, Student Government and a music fraternity, and all of these clubs have even more fun events and opportunities that really make it impossible to get bored.
What is your least favorite thing about living on campus?

Hard to say, because I love living on campus. I guess I would have to say that I wish it was easier to get off campus without a car. You can have one as a freshmen, and many people do, so it is never too difficult to get a ride from someone if you don’t have one… but lots of cars just means parking on campus can be tricky. Did you have any problems with your roommate? We had a few small disagreements (as anyone would), but overall it was pretty smooth. At the beginning of the year, the RAs have you fill out a roommate contract where you and your roomie set up rules for the room such as: when and how often is it okay to have visitors and how far in advance do we need to warn each other? or How often are we going to clean up? When are we going to have quiet study hours? This solves a lot of problems right away, but the biggest way to avoid problems with your roommate is just be honest and talk to them about your needs!
What are some good thing to get into at BU? Whatever you’re interested in! Chances are, there is something that fits what you like to do… or something new you want to give a try. You can check out our Student Organizations here. I agree with Ashlen that Dawg Pound and SGA are very popular and a good place to start. Greek Life can also be very fun and rewarding. If you are into community service, College Mentors for Kids is a very popular club where you are paired with a buddy from Indianapolis Public Schools who comes to visit you once a week on campus. We also have some popular religious groups, such as Campus Crusade for Christ. Hmm, Dance Marathon and Relay for Life are big philanthropy groups that many people get involved with as well! But really, you will have the most fulfilling experience at college if you just explore your own interests. Go to Block Party during the first week and shop around! All the clubs have email listservs you can sign up for which will let you know about upcoming events and how to get involved, and we have a daily email digest for the whole campus with general announcements of activities and opportunities.

I write about weekends a lot in my blog, but they could include any number of things... there is usually a ton going on campus, so our weekends are usually a mix of activities at Butler and around Indy. When we do go off-campus, my friends and I usually like to go out to eat. There are lots of great restaurants really close to Butler where we are regulars. (Yats Cajun food, Cafe Patachou, Bazbeaux's Pizza and Broad Ripple Bagel & Deli are my local favorites, but we usually do late night snacks at Steak n Shake or Qdoba. There's also almost always fun stuff going on around the community - Indy has a pretty sweet arts scene, so there are plays at several theatre companies, symphony performances, rock concerts, improv comedy, musicals, art shows, film festivals, etc. If you're into theatre, you would probably love to check out IndyFringe, which is a huge independent arts festival held here every fall.

But like, I said, more often than not I would probably spend the early part of my evening here at Butler, because we have so much to do here. Clowes Hall right on campus is one of the biggest performance venues in Indy, so we get travelling Broadway shows, dance company's and other sweet stuff right here and with student discounts!! So far this year I've seen The Magic Flute (Indy Opera), Cirque Dreams, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Our student government also shows movies every Friday and Saturday night, and once a semester they host a big concert... last fall we had OKGo. The Jordan College of Fine Arts is also very strong, so it's great to check out ballet performances like Nutcracker, and there are student theatre productions going on all the time... we have a black box theatre that is in use almost every weekend. (So to answer your question about theatre, we have all these professional shows coming thorugh but we also have lots of small experimental shows that are student produced, which I actually tend to like the best!) So, yeah... all that pretty much keeps me busy, plus basketball is really popular here so we usually have a game on the weekends, which I am always at!

So to get back to the typical weekend, after the big activity of the evening at Butler, I would probably go out for some late night food, and then come back and watch a movie or hang out with friends.

Hopefully this helps!! (man, now you have me thinking about the weekend! I can't wait. I'm going out to dinner and a movie with my friends on Friday night, and Saturday is a basketball game and a world-renowned folk dance company at Clowes. is it really only Wednesday??)
