You don't have to tell me. My only excuse is, Butler is becoming so
successful at everything which makes me in higher demand and thus, I
just don't have as much time to sit down and write. (That's sort of
true.)

But lets be honest, if you're not following me on
Twitter, then you're lost anyway, so do yourself a favor and make sure
you're checking my "tweets" on a daily basis: www.twitter/com/butlerblue2.

So
today, Nov. 11, 2009 is Veteran's Day. After reading the title of this
blog you probably thought I was thanking my veterinarians and while
they are great people (Thanks Drs. Phillips, Galore and Rowley), today
I'm aiming my sincere appreciation to those military veterans who serve
and have served our great nation.

A friend of mine sent me a
link to a blog called Mental Floss which hosted several videos of
soldiers coming home to their "best friends" after their tour of duty.
It was moving and something I couldn't help but share with my
readership.

Here it is: http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/40324

So
on behalf of the entire dog population, let me just say that we too
appreciate our veterans' efforts to keep us safe and to serve the land
in which we live.

Coincidentally enough, earlier this week I had
the opportunity to meet some of Butler University's cadets from the
ROTC program. We met up for a photoshoot in preparation for my 2010
Calendar (on sale in the bookstore soon) as I wanted to feature them
for the ever-patriotic month of July spread.

We had a good time and I applaud them for their work to not just earn a
great education, but to support their country at the same time. It's my
honor to feature them in my calendar.

Well, that's about all I
have time for at the moment. I've got to get back to my busy schedule
of athletic events, guest appearances, and whatever other requests come
my way. Make sure you follow along via my Twitter updates!

Otherwise,
I hope to see many of you on Saturday as our men's basketball team
starts their regular season by hosting Davidson at Hinkle Fieldhouse at
2 p.m.

Go Dawgs, Go USA!

Blue II

Applications and Intents to Graduate... I Feel A Song Coming On! Pt. 2

Again, Hello Everyone! I know these past few weeks have been hectic, but I am sure will all make it through to Thanksgiving Break

When I finally finished all my applications, the next item on the agenda was getting my transcripts from Butler. So, early Monday monring I walked into our registrar and records, and asked for help sending out my transcript to the schools. But, what happened next freaked me out. I should preface this part by saying that I am still not fully comphrending that I am Senior in college. Even as I typed that statement I had just gasped. Where did the time go?! How is it that just yesterday I was walking for the first time to class from Ross Hall feeling so nervous, but now the person who is typing to you is just realizing that time has just gone by? It is so sad to think my time here at Butler is almost over, but I guess I can see a positive in not knowing what is to come next. Anywho, going back to the Registrar and Records Office. When I walked into the new office, I asked for assitance in getting the items I needed. Then the lady I was working with asked me if I had graduated. When I explained to her that I would be graduating in the Spring, she told me that I would need to fill out an intent to graduate form in order to have a free transcript. What!? I have been avoiding filling out this paper because I know once it is filled out there is no turning back! I will be an official graduating SENIOR!

Finally, I had gotten up the nerve to fill out the intention, and then quickly filled out other paperwork associated with the original form. That was a sad day. You are now reading a blog from a Graduating Senior, and no longer just a Butler Senior. My time here is coming to and end, and how should I feel!? I am sure if you talk to anyone in my graduating class they would tell you there are going through the exact same feeling. No one wants to leave this place! I know for sure I do not!

Applications and Intents to Graduate... This weekend though was a great one for me, however. Please do not judge me for what I am going to share with you.

Last week was probably one of the most hectic weeks I have ever experience. The reason it was so hectic was because I realized that I was not getting any of my school work done, and my work was taking over my life. Finally, I realized that I couldn't let myself fall behind in class, and told my bosses that I needed to relax a little with the non-school work. When the week was over-ish (Thursday for me starts the weekend since I have no class on Friday) I decided to make a pact with myself that this weekend, and those to follow, were only intended for me to study. This is a VERY hard concept for me to comprehend since my weekends have always been dedicated to not do any school work. Yet, I realized that I needed to accomplish a lot this weekend for the week that I made sure I needed to complete them.

When Friday shone its bright shiny face, I headed on downtown for my internship. This is my second internship, that I get credit for the College of Business, and I walked into work to get my work done. Once 5 PM rolled along, I left and immediately went to study at our library. I could not believe I was doing this. THIS WAS A FRIDAY! Normally on Fridays I get off of work, have dinner, and hang out with my friends all night. This was not the case. As I started to get hungry, Josie and I decided that it was time to eat some grub. We headed to Broad Ripple Village, and ate at 3 sisters cafe. I had a burrito and it was amazing. Josie decided to be adventurous and ordered from their menu something called corn mush. All I have to say is: It was an interesting item, and you should always try new foods. Later that night we didn't want to feel extremely lame so we watched a movie, and I finally went to bed.

On Sunday Morning I woke up really early to have breakfast with a couple of friends of mine. When the clocked hit 8:30 I was blackberry messaged by Jackie letting me know that one of the friends we were suppose to have breakfast with was not going to be coming with us. So, the two of us decided that we could really eat anything at that point, and it was off to McDonald's for their breakfast! When we were finished we drove to the public library, and found out that the library was closed until 1PM. 1 PM!!! I thought the library was always open for the public. Instead we decided to head to Irwin Library. When we were inside we immediately went to business on our homework. When I opened my computer to check my e-mail I decided to see how difficult it would be to get an application done online. To my enjoyment I was so pleased to see that they were so easy to fill out, and out of nowhere I had finished all 11 of my law school applications! I was so shocked and impressed that I was able get that taken off of my to do list. As I filled out my last one I was so relieved, and was so happy to know that all I needed left was finishing up my personal statement, paying for the applications, getting the letters of recommendation, and getting out my transcript.

I am going to end it here for now, but get excited for what happens next!

Hogwarts: we kind of already go there

You might have read Steph's blog called "Sorry Butler, I want to go to Hogwarts now." Well, Butler's campus isn't too far off the Hogwarts mark, and several places in particular remind me of Harry Potter's domain.

I mean, things besides the gorgeous vegetation. The trees are fairly bald at this point, but I have a load of beautiful fall Butler pictures that I took one day that I keep in reserve, so I'll keep posting them. Because I can.

The science library

Ha, I know I talk a lot about the science library. That's because it's a great place to study. Or to check out books like The Science of Harry Potter: How Magic Really Works or A Brain Wider Than the Sky.

But the science library reminds me of Hogwarts because it has a huge skylight on the second story in the middle of the room. The skylight is raised so you get a sense of space, and since you can see the sky, it reminds me of the Great Hall's ceiling, which reflects the weather outside.

Plus there are two long wooden tables with loads of wooden chairs under the skylight, which reminds me both of the Great Hall again and of some sort of castle library. Silly, I know. But there you have it.

The skywalk

When the weather gets chilly (it's actually been gorgeous, and I'm going outside as soon as I finish writing this), I like to cut through the buildings instead of walk out in the chill. Now, these cut-throughs are really, really out of the way. The important thing to understand is that I'm from Richmond, Virginia, and that "chill" refers to the lovely day last year when the wind chill made it feel like -25 degrees. Chilly.

But I digress.

Some of the academic buildings are connected via skywalk, and this for some reason reminds me Hogwarts. I don't know why. I don't remember Harry ever taking a stroll through one. Maybe it's because you get a pretty good view of the grounds from there. I'll just put up two pictures and let you decide.

Jordan Hall

Now, I know I'm not the only who thinks Jordan Hall looks like it should belong in Hogwarts. When my parents were moving me in, they said, "Olivia! You're at Hogwarts."

They were referring to a door. I don't have a picture of that door to Jordan, and one I do have is not as imposing, but you get the idea.

Sometimes the inside looks like Hogwarts, and sometimes it doesn't.

And now you know Butler University is actually a lot like Hogwarts. My roommate suggested that the Greek Houses were like the houses in Harry Potter (Hufflepuff and so on), and that the freshman dorms Ross and Schwitzer looked like they belonged in Harry Potter. They do. I just don't feel like writing anymore, so you can go decide that for yourself.

Hmm. Maybe I expand on this topic in a later post. Whaddya think?

Butler Cribs

Good Thursday All!

I really hope you are enjoying my blog thus far, and I can't believe that I am already more than half way into my first semester Senior year!

I work for the University, and I actually was at work yesterday when a friend of mine told me about Butler Cribs. Ok, at first I was a little unsure of what to expect, but they are hilarious! My boss allowed all the people in the workroom that day to sit down and watch all five of the contestants. I was literally laughing at every single on of them! When the first video was done, the one with the two guys, someone told me that the people who are talking actually made the films. At first I thought the people who are competing were picked, and then the University was filming them. So, from my bewilderment I really impressed with some of them because of the time and effort dedicated to ensuring an entertaining video for all to enjoy.

My bets are on the first two guys, or Hannah! I think my favorite part of it all is how close each of them get to the real Cribs show!

AND, since I am tour guide here - it is an awesome way for you all to see what the rooms look like in each of the residence halls. This will make it much easier when I give tours in the upcoming months - now that I can direct people to the website! So... now go ahead and watch those videos already! They will make you laugh!

And, let me know what you think of them! I would love to hear about it.

parent?

Searching for the right university for your son or daughter can be a
bit overwhelming. Lots of people and
lots of websites are telling you what you should and shouldn't do. In the end, I think you have to listen to
your student and listen to your instincts about who your son or daughter is and
what they need to succeed as they move from high school to college. Make a "to do" list and just take each step
as it comes.

2. What was the best part about the
application process?

I have two daughters - one is a junior and one is a freshman - and they
both independently handled their college applications. The best part of that process was standing
back and watching them take control of the situation. They filled out the applications, worked with
their high school guidance counselor to be sure transcripts were sent, wrote
and submitted the necessary essays, and followed up with the admission offices
to be sure their applications were complete.
I also enjoyed seeing them compose the resume that's included with the application. I was so proud to see a comprehensive list of
all of their accomplishments and I think they felt good sharing it with the
university.

3. What was the most difficult part?

My oldest daughter did experience a slight glitch in the application
process when some of her paperwork became separated from her application. She was in a bit of a panic and I offered her
some advice - contact your high school counselor, contact your admission
counselor, etc. It was tempting to jump
in and do those things for her but I put the ball in her court and let her find
a solution to the problem - which she did!
Sometimes it's difficult not to take over and do those things for them
but our kids are smart, capable people!

4. How many other schools did you look at?

Each of my daughters considered three schools. The oldest always had Butler at the top of
her list and didn't really visit any other campuses. The youngest did visit all three schools but
Butler also became her number one choice.

5. What made Butler stand out?

Of course, Butler has an outstanding academic reputation but several other
things stand out to me. The people
(faculty, staff, and students) are warm, friendly, helpful, and pleasant. When you visit campus, you see students
smiling and laughing as they walk from class to class. You see professors waiving and chatting with
their students in Starbucks, the dining hall, or in the courtyard. Also, Butler students have so many options
and opportunities including 60 different majors and 135 clubs and
organizations. Finally, I think the city
of Indianapolis is a huge selling point for Butler. Whether students are looking for internships
or job opportunities, entertainment or sporting events, museums or parks,
healthcare or shopping, it's all at their fingertips in Indianapolis. It's a great place to live while pursuing a
college degree.

6. What do you wish you would have known
before you started the process that you know now?

I wasn't sure how the admission process and the financial aid process
came together. I thought it would all
happen at once but they are two separate things. First the admission letter is sent and then -
six or eight weeks later - the financial aid package is sent. I think it's important to take your time and
not rush the student to decide until you have all of the information. You don't really have to commit to the
university until May 1st and your enrollment deposit is fully
refundable until then.

7. Is there anything you wish was
different/easier?

I have to say that the FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student
Aid) is rather long and tedious but it's definitely worth completing. Your student may be eligible for aid you
weren't aware of and it's also important to complete the form if you intend to
apply for a student loan so you should set aside time to do that.

8. Any other advice that you have.

I guess I have two bits of advice...try to let your son or daughter be
involved/in control of the college search and application process as much as
possible. This is their future and they
should have a hand in it. Offer advice
but understand that they need to learn to manage their time and efforts because
they'll be doing it on their own when they get to college. The second bit of advice is to enjoy this
time with them and be excited and upbeat about what lies ahead. Try not to burden them with your anxiety or
fears - it's perfectly natural to have them but you wouldn't want that to
dampen your son or daughter's mood during this special time.

Butler has a lot of benches. See Sally sit on all the benches. See Sally sit on all the benches under the lovely fall foliage.

When I wasn't busy playing with alliteration or doing homework on Sunday, I was roaming Butler's campus with camera in hand, searching for lovely vistas to share with you. And I realized that many of those pictures contained benches. I'm surprised more people don't study on the benches, but I suppose it was a tad chilly for bare hands (necessary--for me at least--when reading or writing). Some of my friends have also told me they get too distracted when they sit outside.

I guess I'm going to be distracted no matter what.

No. I'm not that bad. Anyway, I took pictures of Butler's many benches, and here is a small sample of the outdoor seating options available to you.

Near the mall.

In front of Atherton Union...

Near Jordan Hall.

Looking at Jordan Hall. (These notes refer the pictures above, by the way.)

On the path toward the new pharmacy building, where you can watch all the pharmacy student waltz off merrily to their clusters. :)

So, those were the benches of Butler. A picture's worth a thousand words, so I'm going to stop talking now.

What a Day! Part 2

Other than it being just Josie's Birthday - The day also became a
time of a lifetime while heading down south to Bloomington. When we
finally reached Indiana University for the Law School Fair I was
nervous. Then, I remembered having met with law school counselors
before. Earlier in the semester I attended our own Post-Graduate Fair
in which several schools were present to explain their own unique
programs. Now, ours was not nearly the size of the one offered in
Bloomington, but it was great experience and our Office of
Post-Graduate Studies and Internship and Career Services pulled off a
great spread of post-grad opportunities. So, when I walked into the
doors of the hall I felt extremely comfortable, and knew exactly what I
was doing.

The first item I held on to was the sheet of all the schools
present. I have deducted that I think I want to head back west for law
school, but that does not mean I am not looking here in the Midwest. As
I walked through the rows I started to feel a little overwhelmed, but I remembered that I needed to stick to my guns. I immediately got the
sheet, and crossed out every school I knew I was not going to
apply. This allowed me to stay focused on the schools I was interested
in, and allowed me to ask questions that had more depth.

Table after table I learned more and more about my potential
schools, and the feel of law school was in the air. Just walking down
the rows allowed me to realize how much I desire to be an attorney. The
feel of it all was so great, and I felt the only logical step next
would be applying. What was so great about the entire experience
happened when I stepped outside to call my mother after I was finished.
I told her that I had a great time, and that then more than ever I was
ready to start applying. My nerves were gone, and I became comfortable
with my choices. Each school represents something different, and I feel
that even if I just get accepted into one school then that one school
is the right fit for me. I would make it be the best time I have ever
had!

So, watch out Law School! I am on my way to sending you my application!

Have you been to a college fair yet? I would love to hear about your experience!

Travel Season-By the Numbers

Hello Everyone! I apologize for the delay since my last post, but now that I am ALMOST finished traveling and FINALLY back in Indianapolis, I will be posting updates on a more frequent basis. It's hard to believe that I am almost finished with my 5th travel season. This is one of my favorite parts about being an Admission Counselor. I enjoy the opportunity I have to visit high schools and attend college fairs to meet with you all and your families to talk about Butler University!

Instead of sharing all of my stories from the road (many of which you would probably find boring), I've decided to compile a list of 'TRAVEL STATS' that you might find interesting.

Since Septemper 9th, 2009 I have:

drove over 4700 miles across Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

attended 16 College Fairs and visited 55 High Schools.

crossed the Ohio River 21 times over 7 different bridges.

only spent 7 days in Indianapolis.

made 15 trips to Panera Bread. (Free wireless internet on the road is key)

only been to The Fresh Market ONCE!

I hope everyone is having a great Fall thus far! I know many of you have been busy working on college applications as I have many of them in my office now that I'm back in Indianapolis. Just a quick reminder for any Seniors intersted in applying to Butler for next fall, our first application deadline is just over three weeks away on Novermber 15th. You can complete your application for free at go.butler.edu/apply.

Have a great weekend!

especially now that it’s been almost two weeks since the event has come
and gone. I would have done an immediate follow-up, but my old man,
also my designated keyboard specialist, decided to be gone all last
week and didn’t have time to get to my blog, or so was his excuse. (He
took a little trip via semi to Miami, Fla. You can read all about it
here: http://www.visionracing.com/news/index.cfm?cid=24003)

So
I’m behind on the blog, but that’s nothing new. I am getting to be
quite the busy bulldog these days so a late blog is unfortunately
becoming the norm.

How about that Bulldog Beauty Contest?! 2009
was undoubtedly our best contest to date as we had a record 87 dogs
pre-register and 93 dogs participate (believe it or not, we finished in
one hour!).

A hearty congratulations goes out to this year’s
category winners, including our overall winner and “Best in Show” for
the second consecutive year, Mr. Hugo Casey, owned by Butler alumna,
Kearsten Casey of South Bend, Ind.

Hugo earned the honor of
“Best Butler Spirit” by wearing a No. 54 Matt Howard basketball jersey,
wristbands, Dawg Pound cap, basketball necklace/medallion, etc. in
order to advance to the final round and win his second “Best in Show”
title. He was handsomely rewarded for his efforts with a year’s supply
of Holistic Select dog food courtesy of Eagle Pack Pet Food, WellPet
and our good friends at City Dogs Grocery. That’s more than a $600
value for Hugo!

Not only that, but later on in the day, Hugo caught up with his
likeness, Mr. Matt Howard himself and the pair got their picture
together. All I can say is the resemblance is uncanny…brothers from
different mothers.

In addition to Hugo, here are a few more of my favorite contestants from this year's competition:

For

got to offer up my sincere appreciation to our expert panel of judges
which grew to seven members strong this year to accommodate for our two
celebrities, Paul Poteet and Tom Davis of WRTV-6,
Indianapolis’ local ABC-TV affiliate. Paul and Tom had a good time at
the event, shot some footage and even had a couple of contestants in
the studio on Monday morning, Oct. 5th, to recap the event.

Joining
Paul and Tom at the judges table was Kim Netherland of City Dogs
Grocery, Dr. AJ Stump and Kathy Dearing of the Ovid Butler Society
Executive Committee, Thom Burleson of the Alumni Board, and Jonathan
Spear of the Butler University Student Foundation.

Backing them
up was a great group of volunteers made up of my colleagues and Butler
staff, and of course, a record crowd that filled all five sets of
bleachers and more.

Finally, a BIG thanks goes to our sponsors
that made this event possible…City Dogs Grocery, WellPet, Eagle Pack
Pet Food, the Ovid Butler Society Executive Committee, Woodland Animal
Hospital, VCA Animal Hospitals, Susan Smith, Dr. Kurt and Julia
Phillips, and Dr. Deborah Rowley. They deserve all of the credit! Thank
you!

Also, Butler student Alyson Ahrns put togther a nice video recap of the event for the Butler Beat that you can watch right here:

While
Homecoming weekend is always a great time to reunite with friends,
family and your alma mater, it has also served as a quasi kick-off to a
wonderful fall season on campus. In case you didn’t know, it’s a great
time to be a Butler Bulldog…and I’m not just talking about the cooler
weather.

The men’s football team is the only undefeated NCAA
Division I football team left in the state of Indiana with a 5-0
record; most recently winning in dramatic fashion at Homecoming with a
last second field goal over San Diego. Combine that with the fact that
men’s soccer is 8-1-1 and ranked no. 18 in the latest Soccer America
poll, our men’s cross country program is ranked No. 20 in the nation
and basketball practice starts TODAY and I’m more than excited about
being THE Butler Bulldog.

Of course, with all of that means that
my social calendar is filling up for the fall…between athletic
contests, student events, alumni events, school visits, photo shoots
and whatever else people can think up, I’m booked solid. It’s a tough
life, but somebody’s gotta do it.

I’ll just try and be better
about updating you with my engagements and events as they happen, as
opposed to waiting weeks in between blog posts. Of course, you can
always keep closer tabs on me through my Twitter feed (www.Twitter.com/ButlerBlue2), which is updated much more frequently and features exclusive photos.

On
the docket is a full-plate Saturday for this ol’ pooch. We’ll get
started bright, early and bushy-tailed at Hinkle Fieldhouse to welcome
a very select few guests who signed up early to witness one of the
first practices for the top-15 ranked men’s basketball team. Then after
practice head coach Brad Stevens will address the group and share his
outlook on the season and our incredibly tough schedule. This event is
being put on by the Central Indiana Alumni Chapter is our own version
of “Midnight Madness,” only much more subdued and with less fanfare…The
Butler Way.

After that I’ll head outside to hit up the
tailgating festivities in preparation for the men’s football game at 1
p.m. versus Valparaiso. I planning on cruising by the Butler Football
Class of 1959 tailgate and the Butler faculty and staff tailgate, but
I’m open to hanging out with anyone who is out there filling the crisp
fall air with warm Butler spirit. And maybe while my dad isn’t looking
you could slip me a little something from the food table! Shhh, it will
be our secret.

And hey, in case you missed it, you'll probably
get to see me on TV a bit more often this winter as our athletic
department has struck a new TV deal with Indy's local MyINDY-TV, Channel 23, which will broadcast 13 LIVE game telecasts from
historic Hinkle Fieldhouse as well as on the road! Combine that with
the eight games scheduled for ESPN, the one on BTN, the other on FSN
and we have a chance to have 26 of our 28 regular season games played
on TV! You could be seeing a lot of me in your living room this winter!

Alright,
that should be plenty of Butler Blue II scoop for now, but before I
sign off, I did want to let you know that progress continues to be made
on my 2010 calendar. So hopefully we can get it sent to print and on
the Butler bookstore shelves in time for the holiday season!

Woof!

Blue II
