On a side note DePauw is a small university which is roughly about the size of Butler. It really was an exhibition game because our boys just ran all over them. You might be wondering , just like I was, what's the purpose of one of these games, so before the game one of my friends explained to me what an exhibition game was. It's a game where a highly ranked team such as Butler plays against a relatively weak team (such as DePauw) and as a result all of our players get to gain experience playing as a cohesive unit before the league actually starts. The bulldogs started today's game with their foot on the gas, knocking down point after point without a response from DePauw. Skipping all the juicy details we were never down and after the second half we had twice the number of points of the DePauw Tigers. The game ended 77 to 45 and so now I guess I see why we're ranked at number 10 in the nation. Its been a long time coming and maybe this year we jut might make it all the way. Compared to last year the guys are faster, their passing game has improved and good luck getting a lay up to the basket because our defense is killer (for lack of a better word). The schedule for this season games can be found on the Butlersports.com website. This is set up to be an exciting season and if we continue playing anything like we did tonight, we'll have a relatively easy ride to NCAA championships.

GO DAWGS!

Bordeaux 2009!

So this weekend was Alpha Phi's formal....Bordeaux Ball.....so my boyfriend came up, even though he sprained his ankle on Tuesday. It made for an interesting/stressful week leading up to the weekend, because I didn't want him to hurt himself even more or anything.....but at the same time I wanted to experience my first formal with him so badly! He turned out to be the perfect formal date though! He made it here safely, and we got to hang out on the mall that afternoon for a little while (I tried to think of activities that did not involve walking, standing, etc.).....and then he was wonderful all night! We danced the night away (very carefully in his case) and had tons of fun.....and he was pretty handsome too! I would've had an amazing time either way, if he wouldntve gotten to come even....because my best friend from high school was going to go with me if worse came to worse and he couldnt come. I decided to line up a backup date after I got the call from him that said, "Find another date...." on Tuesday night... but then he healed (at least partially) pretty quickly. But anyway, Bordeaux was amazing.....it kind of filled the void that Prom left in my heart since I'm not going this year for the first time in 5 years....lol.

So last week for me was rather uneventful....besides the whole "date for Bordeaux/scotts ankle" crisis. I didn't have numerous tests, or tons of crazy nights full of meetings.....even though I think I wanted to deep down....so I would stay up late anyway. haha. Even when I would have nights with lots of stuff to do, everything would get over soo early it was outrageous. I was done with SGA in like 30 minutes, when it normally lasts like an hour and 30 or more! Which was kind of nice, but it was weird at the same time?? I don't like not knowing what to do with myself....and not having tons of deadlines looming....because say that I don't have something due for like a week, I still won't do it until the last minute. I'm a procrastinating fool. :) I did have a nice visit with my friends Alison and Chris from home though....Alison was on break and she needed to do a photography project for a class...so they came up to the zoo, then we went shopping! :) It was a wonderful day...and it came right at the perfect time. I left for the mall right after Butler lost, which was pretty sad...I was trying to multi-task by doing a paper and watching the game at the same time.....and then they lost...poor guys :( I bet it was because the dance team wasn't there....haha....thats what my boyfriend told me right after the game. Even though we didn't win the game though, Thursday was great because my only class was cancelled for us to watch the game, and because I got to shop with my friends.. :)

So advising for next year starts tomorrow.....holy cow! I'm almost done with my freshman year! Isn't that crazy? I think that it is. We only have 5 full weeks of classes left for this year. That's kinda sad I think. But I am definitely ready to get some of my required classes done. And to get on to the things I came here for....so yeah....I'm off to make my schedule for next year!

My Busy Life and March Madness

I don't know how things pile up on me so fast. At the beginning of this week, I had caught up on all my work, and I promised myself that I would keep up with everything. I think that lasted for about two days. Not that I didn't try to keep up with everything, but it's just impossible to do all the work that's required!

So, it's Sunday, and my "to-do" list looks like this:

Dosage Forms Calculations

Nuclear Pharmacy Calculations

Cluster III Practice Calculations

Therapeutics: study stroke material

PDA: study atrial fibrillation material

PDA: study insomnia material

Finish reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People"

Self Care: study nutrition and vitamins material

Self Care: nutrition paper (due Wednesday)

Dosage Forms: pre-lab (due Tuesday)

March Madness is keeping everyone entertained right now. Our professor was surprised that most of the students showed up for our Therapeutics lecture during the Butler vs LSU game. I have to admit, it was pretty hard to pay attention, and I think everyone in the class was keeping an eye on the scores. Our professor kept asking for score updates throughout the class, so at least he was aware that no one really wanted to be there that day!

Now that Butler's out of the tournament, I'm just cheering for whatever teams I have winning in my bracket. I have UConn as the National Champion, and they're playing really well right now. However, I have Duke in the Championship Game, and I think I might regret that pick. We'll see!

I'm off to keep working on that "to do" list!

Until later,

Ashlen

Retrospective Spring Break: 2008 and SPRING BREAK 2009!

I cannot believe that I wrote my last blog post a week ago. It seems like just yesterday I was finishing up my oral presentation. Spring break '09 is going by way too fast!

I've been doing so much, that this would be the longest blog post known to man if I decided to write it out in paragraph form, so here's the condensed list version:

-Butler basketball games: my parents, Brian and I got last-minute tickets for the Butler vs. Wright State game last Saturday, and at the end of the game my dad and Brian raced to the ticket office and were third in line to get tickets for the Butler vs. Cleveland State game on Tuesday. Brian's family came down for the second game, and obviously that game is a sore topic with me (even a few days later). Maybe I'll be able to write more about Butler basketball once the seeding for the NCAA tournament comes out.

-Wedding planning: always exciting. We picked out linens, looked at invitations, and we think we've found a DJ. Everything's working out well, which is exciting.

-Manicure: with my mom. I can't resist a little pampering.

-Buying a new fish: at the beginning of the school year, I bought two goldfish: Ben and Jerry. Unfortunately, Ben wasn't healthy and didn't survive long in his new home. Jerry's been thriving, through, and I decided that it was time to get him a new friend...Tom!

-Blackhawks game: so much fun! Brian's dad was able to get five tickets for the game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night. Our seats were on the lower level, which was awesome. Being from Canada, I love hockey, and there are three players on the Blackhawks from my home province: Toews, Barker, and Keith. The atmosphere at the United Center in Chicago was awesome.

-Going to the doctor: I've been having problems with my knee since my freshman year here at Butler, and I've never got a correct diagnosis. Yesterday, I went to a new physician in Chicago to get it checked out, and because I'm also having problems with my ankle, hip, and back, he believes it's actually a back problem. After the appointment we headed back to Indianapolis so I could get an MRI, and I'm still waiting on results.

-Reading: How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. I had been told that it was a good book before, but I had never gotten around to picking it up. Now I have to read it for a class. Our professor told us last week that we should be finishing the book, although he had forgotten to mention that we were ever supposed to start reading. Oops. I'm glad I have lots of time this week to get it done.

-Finishing up my Therapeutics project: we had to pretend to be a diabetic patient for five days, and when we're back from break we have to hand in a project about the experience. It includes 20 blood glucose readings (4 per day), a ketone test reading, a reflection paper, and my daily caloric intake and expenditure. It's a bit of work to put together, and I'm really glad that I'm close to finishing the whole thing.

As you can see, I've been really busy! Thankfully I've had a bit of time to rest and relax as well. Tomorrow, my parents leave and they're driving me up to Brian's house on their way to Minneapolis. Brian and I are going to head into Chicago and see the river because they're dying it green for St. Patrick's Day. Brian's aunts live in a condo in downtown Chicago, so we're going to hang out at there place for a bit. Brian's mom is going to come up later, and we're taking Brian's younger cousins and his god-daughter to some sort of Medieval dinner place, where they do jousting demonstrations while you eat, or something like that. I still don't really know what I've gotten myself into! I can't wait to get out of Indianapolis and I'm really excited about the whole thing! Brian and I are heading back to Indianapolis on Sunday with Georgie, his family's dog, before classes start up again on Monday.

I can't believe that it's already been a year since my amazing spring break trip in 2008. Last year was the first year I was no longer playing golf, so I got to do whatever I wanted for the whole spring break. Brian and I spent a while trying to decide where to go....I had already done Florida, and wasn't interested in going again. We considered going west to ski, but our families were coming with us and our parents don't really ski all that much. Finally, we decided on Washington D.C. I had never been there before, and it turned out to be a great decision!

Brian and I took the train from Indianapolis to D.C. and met up with our parents there. Taking the train was a lot of fun, and we really enjoyed seeing the sites along the way. The train was supposed to leave Indianapolis at midnight, but it was late due to a snowstorm, so we ended up leaving at 2am and arriving in Washington late the next evening. The train was a fun way to travel, and a great way to see all the scenery.

We kept ourselves busy in D.C. and went to see all the tourist attractions. On our first day, we did all the monuments. It was a ton of walking, but well worth it to see all the famous sites. Unfortunately the cherry trees around the Jefferson Memorial weren't yet in bloom, but other than that it was a great day. On our trip we also went to Mount Vernon (Washington's home), Arlington National Cemetery, the National Archives and a couple museums. I ended up getting sick with the flu right near the end of the trip, so it cut down on a couple days where we would have done a lot more. Even so, we ended up doing so much that it was possibly the best spring break ever!

Last Friday was Freshman Skits, and we got 2nd! :) Freshman Skits is a competition between the new member classes of each fraternity and sorority, where we put together a skit with dialogue, songs, and dances....and have a ton of fun! :) I was one of the directors of ours, and it was so fun...at least I thought so! The theme this year was BlueTube, so the whole idea behind ours was that there were a few girls in Irwin library studying for finals, and they took a break to watch some videos on BlueTube. I tried to make a video....but my camera died right as my "Mom", Ann, turned it on! :( So here is a summary of what we did... :) So our opening song was the theme song from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, then Bon-Qui-Qui and Darrell from MadTV fought over our Mascot and they had a dance battle to Money Maker and Pretty Fly for a White Guy, then we did the Shoes video (yeah I haven't seen that one as much...lol) but with germs (like the Norovirus.. haha) and we danced to Can't Touch This, and then Obama Girl decided that she likes Bobby Fong (Butler's president) now and they danced to the Thong Song (the Fong Song..haha), then it was Charlie the Unicorn and instead of going to candy mountain they were going to the Butler Bowl for the snow day to sled (check out my blog about the snow day...), and finally we all danced to the S Club 7 song. :) Yeah it was wonderful! Every song had new lyrics to go along with either the Bulldog being stolen, or the Norovirus, the Snow Day, or Bobby Fong.....and they were so funny! Freshman Skits was meant to give us a way to get to know the girls in our pledge class better, and it definitely did! We had lots of practices, but we made sure that we kept the mood light-hearted and fun even when we got nervous and stressed! We definitely learned that there is nothing that an A-Phi cheer can't fix! :) AHH it was so much fun. I'm glad that we don't have to go to practice anymore, even though we didn't have a ton..lol. But I do miss it now! I miss seeing those girls all the time....but it just makes me even more excited to get to live in the house next year! We did housing the other day, and I got an awesome room with 2 of my best friends, Nicole and Em. :) It will be a wonderful year I'm sure!

So last weekend after Freshman Skits I went home....which was just what I needed. I played with my dog, and slept in, and spent time with my family and some of my friends... it was wonderful!!!! :) Stella, my puppy who is only 3 months old, is HUGE! She is a chocolate lab, and the last time I saw her I could hold her in one arm....but now its hard for me to hold her at all! She is so smart, she can sit and lay down and fetch (kind of)....we are going to have so much fun together during spring break. She has been spoiled by my mom and dad....they feed her from the table sometimes....and give her the t-bones when they have steak....so I get to spoil her when I get home! But I will need to spoil my other 2 dogs too...even though they aren't inside. I'm pretty excited to go home and see them all again!

Well tomorrow is my last basketball game, and tonight the new members of Phi are kicking out everyone who lives in the house, and we get to have a sleepover there! So I'm off for a night of fun with my sisters!

Happy Valentine's Day!

I can't believe how quickly a year has gone by. It seems like we just had Valentine's Day, and here it is rolling around again!

Last year's Valentine's Day was really special. Brian and I started dating in early March of 2007, so by the time we celebrated our first Valentine's Day, we had been dating for almost a year. He made a really big deal of it....he bought me a dozen roses (which were gorgeous and lasted forever) and a box of chocolates. I bought him a personalized frame, that now holds a picture of the two of us and sits on his bedside table. I also baked him some really big sugar cookies, and decorated them with frosting. It was a pretty awesome day, and for the first time ever I really enjoyed Valentine's Day.

This year we decided to celebrate a little differently because my mom had come down to visit me this past week. We stayed home all day, and we didn't do anything really special. However, we did exchange gifts. I gave Brian a jacket from the football team in my hometown, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Brian gave me a box of chocolates (I'm eating them slowly) and a puzzle! I know that a puzzle doesn't sound very exciting, but I love puzzles. He had a personalized puzzle made, which was really cool. The puzzle is a map of a section of Indianapolis, with my apartment's address right in the middle! How awesome is that?

Other than Valentine's Day, it's been a pretty un-eventful week. I was able to go to a basketball game on Friday night with Brian and my mom, and that was a lot of fun. We won, which was great, but this afternoon we just lost to Loyola, which is definitely not good. Friday night was a lot of fun though. We got out of our Therapeutics case conference really early, and then we all went to Broad Ripple to eat dinner at Noodles & Company. It's a great place to eat if you're looking for a lot of different types of food. My mom had macaroni, and Brian and I had Pad Thai.

I hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day.....up next is Spring Break 2009! Get excited!

Until later,

Ashlen

Waiting Patiently

Cluster are almost over. They were scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Monday, which means that I have all weekend to study for my one final exam! However, it kills me to sit around and wait for grades to be posted. I'll admit, I'm pretty unique in this sense. Some of my friends don't check the grades until they hear from someone else that they're posted online or the results are in our mailboxes. However, I'm habitually checking....I like to know as soon as possible how I did. So here I am....waiting patiently.

Last night I relaxed. We had 4 exams in a 30 hour period, so I needed to take some time off. I spent a couple hours on the couch watching TV / napping. Then, my fiance, his roommate, and I went to Five Guys. If you haven't tried a Five Guys hamburger, I definitely recommend that you check it out....it's amazing!

After dinner we headed back to my fiance's apartment. We were watching TV, but there wasn't anything really good on, so somehow we decided that it would be fun to play a board game or something. Instead, we found "Phase 10" which is a card game my fiance had been given as a gift, but never played. Not long before the three of us were going to start playing, one of our friends called and we convinced him to come over and play with us. It turned out to be really fun! It was very competative, which is surprising because the game lasted for about three hours.

This morning I slept in until about 10am. It felt amazing to not feel guilty about rolling out of bed so late. After some coffee, a shower, some e-mail checking, and a phone call with my parents, my fiance and I headed out to have lunch at McAlister's Deli. I discovered McAlister's while I was living on campus, but I didn't go there a lot because there aren't any around Butler. However, it's located about 3 minutes from where my apartment is now, and it's a great lunch place. I love their lemonade, but it comes in HUGE cups, so I usually order one and take what I can't drink home and keep it in my fridge. It can usually last me for a couple of meals.

Right now I'm about to start studying for the final exam on Monday afternoon. With a bit of studying, hopefully I can pull off an awesome grade. I've got some college basketball on in the background, and once the Butler game starts I'll be checking the scores every few minutes. Like every Butler fan, I hate Wright State (or Wrong State, as we like to say). We've had some really amazing teams that have struggled against Wright State for some reason, because their teams are never as good as ours (not that I'm biased or anything). I've been to games at their arena, and the fans are nasty. I hope that everyone that is on the bus that went to the game today cheers like wild, and hopefully we can finally pull off a win at their home court! Go Dawgs!

Until later,

(We don't get a big sis like other houses do....we get a mom....and then her mom is our grandma, and her mom is our great grandma!) I even have a twin, and I can't wait until our big happy family gets to have an outing soon!

So as I mentioned previously, I've been real busy with dancing at games and such lately....so I put together a video from one of the games a few weeks ago... :) Mad props go out to my mom who did all the videotaping for me...:) or maybe dad to.....but thanks parents! It was an exciting game.....and I hope you guys like it! :)

while all that's going on, we in admission have been working. and working. and working. we have had a ton of events, and hopefully lots of you have been able to take advantage of the admitted student basketball games....yes, i said basketball games. in case you haven't noticed, bu men's b'ball is ranked #11 in the country. and before any of you jump all over me, yes, we lost on monday to green bay. but, our rpi rating did...not...move. awesome! we are still ranked #9 in rpi, which means we are still among the best. i would love to see us win out from here and get a nice 3 or 4 seed in the tourney.

anyway, back to the events. we still have more coming up, like scholars forum. that's coming up this weekend and next. i hope i get to meet with some of my students from indiana and michigan.

while it's been tough to be working so many evenings and weekends, it is pretty gratifying to meet and talk with some really great students. at a pharmacy event last week, i had lunch with a family (not even from my territory!) and walked away so impressed by the maturity and brightness of this girl. she was interviweing for a lilly scholarship--hopefully it went well, i think it was this week. she volunteered in a pharmacy, was super involved, and just a great example of what i think defines a butler student.

on a final note, has anyone heard the most recent album by tv on the radio? it is one of the most unusual cd's i've heard in some time. i feel kinda like the first time i heard radiohead albums; so groundbreaking. a little bob mould, a little prince, very funky. anyone who has heard some interesting music, please send me suggestions. i'm getting into a mode of really wanting to hear new tunes....but i'm old school: i buy cd's......:)

Snow Day? No...Snow Delay. No Wait - It is a Snow Day!

Butler University does not like to cancel classes. Maybe it's because of the high tuition that we pay - the administrators feel bad about missing something that we've paid for. Maybe it's because we have such rigorous schedules - cancelling one day means cancelling labs and tests that need to be made up. Professors make really precise schedules for their classes, and if one day gets missed....well, it's just not pretty.

Snow days are still a relatively new concept for me. I lived in Canada for 14 years, so you would think that I would be used to the snow, especially living in Manitoba, where we definitely get our fair share of snow. However, because we get SO much snow at home, the city knows how to deal with it really well. It can snow overnight and you won't even know unless you happen to wake up to the sound of the snowplows at 6am. In my 14 years living in Canada, I vaguely remember having ONE snow day. It was due to a blizzard in April of 1997. I remember that when we opened our front door, the snow was almost as tall as myself. The snow ended up causing the Red River to flood in Manitoba, Minnesota, and North Dakota, and the flood became known as "The Flood of the Century."

Considering that I was used to going to school no matter what the weather when I was a kid, I didn't realize that "snow days" really existed in Indiana. The night before the last day of classes during my first semester at Butler, we got a dump of snow. Not expecting anything special, I got up, got dressed, and went to my 8am class as normal. I thought that it was a little strange that I was the only person outside, so I checked my cell phone to make sure that my alarm clock hadn't gone off an hour early by mistake. Of course, it was the right time, so I kept walking to class. When I got to class, there was no one there. In fact, there was no one in the entire building. I was baffled, and I had no idea what was going on. I waited around for about 15 minutes or so, but no one ever came, so I decided to trudge back to Schwitzer Hall to check my e-mail and see what was going on. Well, chaos had erupted in the dorms since I had left. Signs had been posted around the dorm (probably right after I went to class) announcing that school we cancelled due to snow. It was great to have the day off to study for finals, and I definitely learned my lesson - if it snows, class just might be cancelled!

Class was cancelled one other day my freshman year - it was second semester, and the power went off a large part of campus. They couldn't get the power restored in time for classes, so we had a day off. Unfortunately, it also happened to be the day of the URC (Undergraduate Research Conference) which is hosted at Butler every year. Classes are often cancelled for URC, and mine had been cancelled already.

Sophomore year, we had two consecutive snow days in February. The weather forecasts had predicted a big storm, so Butler decided to be prepared and rather than cancelling classes in the morning, they went ahead and cancelled the evening before. I remember that we played a basketball game against Florida Gulf Coast that evening. Most ticket-holders decided not to show up, so Hinkle Fieldhouse was almost empty (compared to normal). Students could basically sit wherever they wanted, so I took a seat right behind the Butler bench, two rows up....basically the best seats in the place! Getting to the game and back was no fun at all, but having the awesome seats made it worth the walk.

Our Therapeutics professor first put the bug in our head about having a snow day today. In fact, he seemed kind of excited about it, as long as we could be back in class on Thursday for our Therapeutics lecture on hypertension! I didn't leave campus until about 5:45 last night because I had lab. Lab normally runs until 5pm, but it ran late yesterday, and then I called my mom and talked to her for a bit before walking to my car. We have to dress professionally for lab, whcih meant that I was wearing dress pants and ballet-slipper shoes. Obviously I wasn't dressed well for walking to my car, or brushing off the 3 inches of snow that had accumulated on my windshield. I was able to pull our of the parking lot just after six. Getting to Meridian (a main road in Indianapolis) wasn't too bad, but once I hit Meridian the traffic was terrible. My drive normally takes 15 minutes, but it took me an hour last night, and it was absolutely mentally exhausting. I'm pretty sure that I wasn't the only person habitually checking my e-mail last night for the notification that we would have a snow day. I turned off my computer just before midnight, but there was still no word from Butler.

The rumor among students is that Bobby Fong (Butler's president) wakes up between 4am and 5am in the morning, looks out his window, and decides if school is going to be cancelled that day. I don't know if it's true, but I got the notification that classes would be delayed until 10am at 4:22am. Since my freshman year, Butler has put in an "emergency notification system." It was implemented largely in response to the tragedy at Virginia Tech. Basically, you sign up for this system, and if there is any violent crime around Butler's campus, or any other type of emergency (including school closing) you can get e-mails, phone calls, or text messages (or a combination of the above). I left my phone on last night so that I would know to shut off my alarm if I got the "big call." Unfortunately, the call wasn't exactly what I was expecting. My lab this morning normally starts at 9am - because 9am classes were cancelled, did that mean that my entire lab was cancelled? When I woke up I checked my e-mail - and lab was still on, just for a shorter period of time. Then came my adventure of getting to school...

I got ready this morning as quickly as possible. I could see that the cars driving in the parking lot of my apartment complex were going really slow, so I knew it would take me a long time to get to school. Thankfully, I have a covered parking space, so I didn't have to waste time brushing off my car. I thought I would get stuck backing out of my space, but surprisingly, I didn't. Then I shifted into drive....and got stuck. I got out of my car, to see if I could somehow manage to dig myself out. A guy was walking by and said to me "just take the day off!" I told him that I was a college student, and that our classes were delayed, but not cancelled, and that I had to be at school by 10am (it was about 8:50am at this point). His jaw dropped, and he offered to help push my car out of the snow. Thankfully, he got me out pretty easily. I would have liked to have gotten out to thank him, but I was concerned that if I stopped I would get stuck again, so I lowered my window and waved. I hope he saw.

The roads were way worse than I expected. The good thing, however, was that almost no one was out driving in comparison to the night before. That didn't mean that there weren't problems, though. As I pulled out of my apartment complex, I could see two cars stuck on the main road. I was successfully able to get on to the road, and soon discovered that everyone was simply driving in the middle of the road and ignoring the lanes completely. Whatever works, right? I made it all the way to Meridian....the left turn I had to make was slippery, but I survived it okay. Halfway down Meridian, my phone rang. I figured that if I was having this much trouble getting school, then everyone probably was having the same problems. Sure enough, it was another emergency notification. In a voice which sounds oddly like a combination of Bobby Fong and Stephen Hawking, it told me that classes were cancelled for the day. My frist reaction was anger - seriously Butler? You couldn't have told me this BEFORE I woke up early, got ready, and drove through these ridiculous conditions? Seriously? I mean, it was 9:30am - you had to have some idea that most commuter students and staff were already on the road. Thanks a lot. After I got home though, I got excited - I'm going to have the most productive day! I've been getting behind on cleaning, so I've promised myself that I'm going to get it done today. Yay!

Here's a picture of what it looks like in Indianapolis right now - as you can tell by the cars in the parking lot, no one is going anywhere today!
