Where have I been? Well, I've been all over the place!

Monday- Had lunch at Alpha Chi Omega and had a ton of fun. The girls there are absolute sweethearts. Granted, I haven't had lunch at any of the other houses but... well, so far, they've got my vote. Immediately after lunch, I had to run up home (Fishers) for a dentist appointment. Let me say this- the dental hygienists are obsessive about gums. It was terrible. After a quick stop at Target (my all time FAVORITE store), I headed back home for some homework and more homework. 17 credit hours do that to you.

Tuesday- Tuesday's are my worst day. Plain and simple. I have Biology Lab from 9-12, then I have Economics 1-2:15 (test that day... went alright), followed by Sociology 3-4:15, and finished off with FYS (first year seminar) from 5-6:15. No matter how you twist it, that is a LONG day. By the time I got back to my room, I was able to squeeze in some work then... take a breather. I cannot tell you how nice it is to take some time to myself.

Wednesday- Classes (biology and spanish) from 9-12 and then I was supposed to have lunch at Kappa Alpha Theta but I forgot I had to babysit up in Carmel! Eek! I felt so bad that I had to miss so I emailed them real quick with an apology then headed out the door. I am babysitting for these 2 doctors up in Carmel (a suburban city north of Butler) and I get to watch a 2 month old baby! I would say it was fun but he's a fussy one. Though I suppose that is what babies do. After I finished at 6 and with $50 in my pocket I headed to my sister's soccer game (after picking up some Wisconsin mac & cheese from Noodles & Company. YUM!): Cathedral High School versus Carmel High School. They lost 3-0. Rough day. My poor sister broke her back this year and is slowly recovering. She is one of the stronger kids I know. After that... I went to Starbucks...

To know me is to know that I love coffee. The girls at my local Starbucks know me and my order. Yes, I know a tad embarrassing but for me and my friends, it's our summer in a nutshell. So many fun long nights were spent there. I took some photos, however terrible, to archive the evening:

Meet Kevin. He's a doll. I love him.

That's Ashley (the blonde). I adore her with all my heart. She is the greatest of friends. And next to her- that's Katie. You know the phrase 'beat to your own drum'... Katie coined it.

I have more pictures but I am running out of room! To put it simply, I love my friends. They have been so good to me but it has been tough because they are all seniors in high school. My friend Courtney and I are the only college students of the group. Luckily, I live close enough to drive up and visit. Fortunately, I have the greatest friends who always keep in touch and remind me why friends like them are there to stay.

We The Living performed at Starbucks tonight on campus. I didn't get to see them play but I did see their 'van' and equipment. Golly, I love college.

If I could make a barking noise I would. Go Dawgs!

It's 4:20 and I just visited all the sororities with some girls from my unit, 1E (except Alpha Phi. We were too late.) and, before, I was total skeptic about sororities and greek life. I had heard from friends about hazing and drinking and such at different schools and I did NOT want to be a part of that. However, after visiting all the houses (except Alpha Phi), my mind has been changed.

First House= Alpha Chi Omega

Second House= Delta Gamma

Third House= Delta Delta Delta (or Tri-Delta)

Fourth House= Kappa Kappa Gamma

Fifth House= Kappa Alpha Theta

Last House= Pi Beta Phi

You can't really know until you get to know the girls and it's tough. At least for me. I have been trying to get involved but... it's been hard to get into some organizations. I never got a call back for BUSF which I think is kind of rude. I wanted to get in, sure, but at least tell me that I didn't make it instead of not calling. Plus, I have been working so hard at school and such that I haven't been going out to the greek events which makes it hard to get to know the girls. I'm really glad Butler doesn't make us decide until the end of our semester rather than rushing right at the beginning. It helps you to get assimilated to Butler. I just hope that, if I do end up rushing, that I get bids based on my personality and work ethic... not my looks or ability to party. Well, I think I better finish this thing up. I have work up to my ears that I must attend to. However, I leave you with a picture of old Butler. It's pretty crazy how much it has changed over the years.

It also caused problems with the transfer from the old tech chair to me, because the program is for Macs and I have a Gateway. So, this summer, I've set out to create a new website that's easy for viewers and future tech chairs alike (not to mention a lot cuter haha). Initially I didn't realize how much of a job I was undertaking, but I've found that creating an entirely new website consumes a great amount of time, especially in designing all of the different pages and transferring information.

Since I've been home however, I've had more time to spend just playing around with the site, and it's starting to look really good! I'm using an Internet program called Microsoft Office Live, which lets users create websites for free. It is very easy to use, yet still contains numerous options and features for sites with originality. I plan on having the new Theta website linked to the Butler Greek Life page sometime in August, where anyone and everyone will be free to check it out. Until then, I've copied some pages to give you guys a little sneak peak. :) If you have any thoughts or suggestions, let me know!

I remember last year being stuck at home, waiting anxiously as the days dragged on by. But living at Butler and working on research every day has made the past nine weeks fly by at an amazing speed. But even though I'm moving back home tomorrow, I don't expect a sudden standstill. My final month of summer will be full of traveling and visiting family, and I'm sure I'll be kept busy all the while. Here are my plans:

July 18-31: Hang out at home, unpack my stuff/reorganize for the school year, reunite with HS friends, read for fun, and tan. (You wouldn't believe how pale I am from staying inside and working on research all day, everyday haha).

August 1-6: Travel to Minneapolis, MN with my mom to visit my cousin Laurie and go shopping. The Mall of America is near her house, along with numerous other malls and outlet stores... plus there's no sales tax in Minnesota! Trust me, the women in my family know how to shop!

August 7-12: More hanging out at home, getting everything ready for school... which is sure to be a challenge. I'm living in a five-person room next semester, so storage space for my stuff will be quite limited.

August 13: My 21st Birthday! Dinner with friends, and hitting up Broadripple for the night.

August 15-20: Carnival cruise to Mexico! I'm going with my boyfriend and his family, and I've never been on a cruise before, so I'm sure it's going to be a blast!

August 22: Move back into Theta for the Fall '09 term!

Yes, it may seem a little hectic haha... but my last month of summer sure is going to be fun!

Farewell sweet BU

This will be my last blog post of the year! Wow. Time flies. I can't believe that this year is actually coming to a close. I am having such a hard time staying focused to study for exams...I just want to play with my friends before we all have to leave to go home! I had two finals yesterday, journalism and biology. Both went pretty smoothly except my biology one was given in a different room than we are usually in. The room felt like a sauna. It was so hot I thought I was going to have a heatstroke. Also it was right after I ate lunch so I was really sleepy. But it wasn't that awful, I survived.

We also had room picks on Tuesday night for Theta. I am rooming with one of my good friends and another girl who I absolutely LOVE and will hopefully get to know better. We were able to get one of our favorite rooms in the house so that was definitely exciting. I also was able to sign up for a bottom bunk in the cold dorm which is awesome. The way our house is set up, we have desks, dressers, and closets in our rooms but we all sleep in a big room on the third floor. It's kind of like summer camp. There is a big room full of bunk beds and that's where all of us sleep. Its called the cold dorm because it is always cool (with the windows open) and dark, so even if you want to take a nap in the middle of the day you can go up there and find some peace and quiet. I'm really looking forward to moving into the house and getting to know the other girls on a deeper leve.

Today I had the day off which was nice. I had one of my big bros over for lunch at the Theta house because he is leaving to go home tomorrow. I'm not going home until next Tuesday so I have a few more days left to savor. I have a mass communications exam tomorrow and then I have my music final on Saturday morning. My roommate isn't leaving until Tuesday either because she has a final on Monday so I just decided to stick around and hang with her for a day or two more. I have SO much stuff to pack up so I will need the time. Also our RA just informed us that our room will be used as a tour room for students during the summer...wonderful. That means we actually have to clean. We are two of the messiest people in existence and never clean our room, so this should be interesting. I'm just not ready to leave yet. I'm scared of being a sophomore and growing up. Last weekend when I went home I was dreading coming back to school but now I don't want to leave :( I wish we could stay and hang out and just not do the whole schoolwork part of it :)

This summer I will be nannying for two little girls who are our neighbors. They don't get out of school for another month by the time I get home so I will have some time to relax and get my ducks in a row before work starts. My clothes are all over our house - in tupperwares in the garage and the basement and thrown in my closet - so I need to go through them and get rid of stuff I never wear and try to get that organized! Also it will give me some time to maybe find a night job at a restaurant or something and to hang out with my friends that are about to graduate from High school and those that are home from college. My dad and I are taking a week to go fishing in lakes and ponds around the area and enjoy the hopefully beautiful weather. I really like fishing and I haven't been all year so that will be a lot of fun to get to spend time with my dad. I'm sure my mom and I will take some shopping trips and do some movie nights together too :) I've missed her a lot.

I am really looking forward to coming back to school next year though. The past month or so has been rough with so much schoolwork and just trying to make it to the end of the year. This year has been very eye-opening. College is an experience unlike anything else in life. Living on your own, making your own rules and trying to decide who you want to be is probably the hardest thing you will ever have to deal with. You just have to take it one day at a time and learn from your mistakes. Everyone is here to learn and to grow and sometimes its nice to know that you're not all on your own. We're all in the same boat. You'll have days where you just don't want to get out of bed and face the world and days where you can't help but tell everyone about that awesome grade you got on your paper or that you finally declared your major. You just have to milk it for all its worth and stop worrying about what other people think. These four years are your life and what you make of it. If you constantly worry about what other people think or waste your time trying to be someone you aren't you won't be happy. Its only until you discover who you are and the person that you want to be, regardless of what your parents or friends or professors may think that you will have so much happiness and fun that you never even knew existed. College is so much more than just classes and finals and parties and a degree.

"It takes courage to grow up and become who we really are. All our dreams can come true...if we have the courage to pursue them."
-- Walt Disney

The final countdown

I am officially done with classes for the spring semester... how exciting! The last day of lectures was yesterday, and today we were given a free-day for reading break. Unfortunately, this means that tomorrow is the beginning of finals week. I'll have five total this year (brutal, I know) but I've already taken two, and one other was a take-home essay test which I've already finished! So if you're following me here, that leaves two for this week: on Thursday and Friday. I don't think they'll be too bad, and I've already gotten through the bulk of it all so that helps! Plus I just have to keep in mind that I get to go HOME on Saturday! Summer is so close I can practically taste it!

Luckily, this past weekend was a lot of fun for my last one this spring! Although I spent all day and afternoon studying, my nights offered a bit of a break from all of that! Friday night was Senior Wills at Theta. This is basically an event where all of the seniors gather all of their KAO shirts, sweatshirts, bags, hats, picture frames, umbrellas... and other RANDOM things they don't want anymore and give them to the younger girls! It's hilarious to see the seniors just throwing - and I mean literally, throwing - their stuff into a crowd while the rest of us grab anything and everything we can. Not that I really need any more Theta paraphernalia to begin with (seriously, I could go at least a month wearing a new KAO shirt each day and not have to do laundry) but it's always fun to get some new gear, especially for free!

Saturday night Delta Tau Delta had a themed dance that was held at Jillians downtown! The theme was CMT v. BET, and as I'm sure you can imagine, some of the costumes got pretty creative haha. For my last dance of the year, the location was actually really fun because there were games and pool tables in addition to a dance floor!

Overall, it was a fantastic last weekend here at BU... but I'm afraid I'll have to leave this blog at that... I need to get back to studying!

Wii play like ALLSTARS!

Whew... what a weekend! One thing the Spring semester always brings is overprogramming. It can be exhausting, yes, but also extremely fun! Friday night was Spring Sports Spectacular! I know I talked a bit about this in my last blog... it's a huge sporting event with various activities ranging from soccer and volleyball to karaoke and chess. Greek and non-greek housing units compete in the competition that lasts all night long! I played in the whiffleball tourny, which was really exciting! I think my competitive side came out a little haha... but it was mostly about getting everyone together and having fun. Theta ended up coming in third in whiffleball... a title that we were very proud of!

When not playing in the tournament, I watched and cheered on the other girls in their events. I didn't make it quite so far into the night this year - only until about midnight - but my some of my sisters were up competing in events that didn't even start until 5:00 AM! No matter what sports were played or won, I think everyone who went had a great time... and the best thing of all? Spring Sports Spectacular raises money for the Special Olympics... this year we raised almost $10,000!

Also Delt's philanthropy that I had mentioned before started later that night, TRIKE! All the money went to the kids of Reilly Children's Hospital so all of the houses worked hard to raise money for it. Friday night was the Lip syncs and pledge auction. All of the houses did an amazing job with their lip syncs, and fortunately Theta won!!! It was really exciting, our girls worked so hard. My theta mom was a contortionist and put her leg behind her head and all this crazy stuff, and then another girl was a clown, and another girl blew fire! It was funny because she was practicing with the fire earlier in the day in the basement of the house, and the smoke detector was right above her. The fire alarm went off and everybody was so confused about what was going on. The house mom tried to call the fire department to tell them what had happened, but it was too late! There were two fire trucks outside of Theta and all of the people across the street at Phiesta had no idea what was going on.

The pledge auction was hilarious as well. Each pair of boys performed a "talent." Most of them pretended to sing songs and danced around. One of my good friends even dressed up like Taylor Swift, sporting my hannah montana wig and my roommate's dress. It was so so funny. I ended up buying my Big Bro and one of his friends but we still have to come up with a plan as to what do make them do for us. . .maybe shave a little KAO in the back of their heads :)?

The next day was the carnival and trike races. Unfortunately it was also parents day for the University and many of the houses, so a lot of girls from our house couldn't show up because their parents were here. I actually ended up having to participate in the races!! I led our team to victory three times. . .but we didn't win. It was really a lot harder than you would think. I think getting the momentum is the most difficult part, and there are no brakes! So you kind of just have to slam your feet down and hope you stop. I've retired from my trike riding days even though it was a great run. I can send autographs in the mail if anyone's interested. . .

4 3 2 1

There are 4 weeks left in the semester. Its CRAZY! I don't know how freshman year has passed by so quickly. I had my scheduling meeting with my advisor today it's just so unreal. It feels like just yesterday I was hauling in my overpacked luggage and sweating in Schwitzer, wondering what to do next. Now it's a second home and I feel like there is never a shortage of things to do around here. I have a pretty long list of things I still have to do before this weekend is over!

This weekend is going to be really really fun though. My roommate's sorority, Alpha Phi, is having their philanthropy event. Its called Phiesta and is a soccer tournament and taco bar held on Friday over at their house. I'm terrible at soccer but I'll definitely go cheer my friends on and get some good mexican food :) It's also been Delta Tau Delta's philanthropy week, which they call Trike. All the funds raised go to Riley Children's hospital here in Indianapolis, its a great cause. They had a cookout Monday, had tours around the hospital Wednesday, and then today they came around and serenaded all of the sorority houses to invite us to their big event tomorrow night. They're auctioning off their newest initiated members, and the boys have to show off their talent to try and get the girls to buy them. Whoever the highest bidder is, is then treated to massages, having their room cleaned, or even getting the guys to shave the letters of the girls' house into the back of their head. Needless to say, it's going to be hilarious!

They also have a lip sync competition tomorrow night. Lip syncs are not at all what they sound like! The first time someone told me about them I was like "ohhh okay like karaoke?" Lip syncs are basically dance competitions between the sororities. Each house makes a mix of a bunch of different songs and then a panel judges the dances to determine a winner. There were too many people that wanted to do Lip syncs for Theta so we split up into two groups, and the older girls are doing Trike while us freshman and sophomores are performing for Phi Psi's philanthropy event, Phi Psi 500. We just got started on the dance and so far it's really fun :)

Saturday they have an actual Trike race, where girls from each house ride the trikes. It will be funny to see some of my theta sisses riding the little trikes haha. BUT let's not forget about schoolwork. I have a Bio exam next week that I'm dreading. Sometimes I forget that I come here for academics and not just for fun!

Fun Facts :)

Exciting fact #1: I am officially a member of ΚΑΘ! Thats right, this past week was our initiation week and now I can officially say I am a Theta sister and I can wear my letters. Its been a crazy fun week, and the excitement continues. Last week we found out who our Bis Sis' are. My big sis Stephanie and I met during recruitment week and really connected, and continued to talk after the week was over. It turns out we go to the same church and have the same break during the day on Mondays and Wednesdays so I've had the chance to spend a lot more time with her and get to know her. However, we still don't know who our Moms are! The difference between the two, is that our sis' are juniors and our moms are sophomores. This week we keep getting little surprises from our moms which are really fun.

Exciting fact #2: Spring Break is nearing! I am so excited for break to arrive. My family and I are going to Disney World and I am THRILLED! I haven't been to Disney since sixth grade so it will be fun to go and ride all the rides and take pictures and all that jazz. I'm going all out too. I have a little brother who is 10 and I'm making him ride all the rides with me and get pictures and autographs from all the characters and find the hidden Mickeys...the list goes on! It will be nice to get out of this dreary midwest weather too. Its been a little warmer, but still that lovely bleak gray sky that we have come to know and love here in the Butler Bubble. I wouldn't mind getting a bit of a tan either.

Exciting fact #3: We got third place in freshman skits :) All of us Theta tots worked so hard on our skit, and it paid off! Friday night we performed our skit for the judges and an audience of all the greek houses and butler students who wanted to come see them. It was held in Hinkle and it was SO nervewracking waiting for the judges to decide who the winners would be. We went first so luckily we got to watch everyone elses' skits: Some of the groups had to wait in the back to perform so they didn't get to see the skits that came before theirs. We practiced a great deal last week, and one of the girls almost broke her nose during the dress rehearsal! Needless to say we had a great time and were very proud of our new member class!

Exciting fact #4: Our semi-formal is this weekend! And I have a date!! The theme is "The Great Gatsby and The Roaring Twenties." I borrowed my friend's flapper dress to wear for the occasion and we have yet to figure out what my date is going to wear :) I'm really looking forward to this weekend though. We aren't allowed to know the location of the event, so its a total surprise and we take a bus there. I'll be sure to take lots of pictures!

Exciting fact #5: SPRING BREAK. TWO WEEKS :) Sorry I already said that one. But I can't wait. It also means no homework, which all of us can appreciate!!

Just tough out the next few weeks and then you've got a week to chill and have no worries. Thats what I keep telling myself at least
