Okay not really. That's why it's a secret. But I did take four years of Japanese in high school. That's right, I was practically fluent, and then I graduated and I haven't spoken much since. I miss my Japanese class a lot. We had a really great program at my high school and the teacher was just amazing, making sure we knew our stuff and also feeding us candy, noodles, and what-have-you at least twice a semester.

Anyway, I saw in the Butler Connection that ASIA (whose website is down!) was hosting a Sushi Party last Wednesday! Naturally, I went. The funny thing is, I'm not a sushi connoisseur. In fact, I've only really had California rolls. But if you know me, I will try any kind of food, unless I think it has E. coli. And I can find out.

Everything that I didn't like about sushi before tonight seems to have disappeared from my taste repertoire. I used to not like nori (the dried seaweed wrap), but it was awesome, and I used to hate wasabi, but now--even though it set my sinuses on fire--I really like it. And raw fish? Used to make me squeamish, but I was throwing raw tuna and salmon on mounds of rice and nori the whole time. It was delicious!

And since I'm hardly involved enough on campus, I think I might join ASIA next semester and get my culture on again. :D Hooray!

Sushi, pre-rolled. I believe this one had salmon, tuna, rice, "ro" (those bright orange fish egg things), wasabi, and rice seasoning. Behind it is my sad excuse for sashimi.

Oishii desu! It's delicious.

Now my goal is to get a sushi making kit. I have a lot of exotic foods that I want to try and make. If anyone has a good curry recipe, throw it my way.

Gochisousama.

The Shame Game

I quit NaNoWriMo. It was killing my soul to do it and it's killing my soul not to do it, but I had to choose the path that would prevent me from causing physical harm to inanimate objects during Thanksgiving break. In a strange turn of events, I've been doing a whole ton of other writing, which has been fun and refreshing after a long drought. I'm still going to be NaNoSuMo-ing (National Novel SUPPORTING month!) Olivia and the few others I know who are doing it. :)

Also, biochemistry pop quiz today. Rough. 16 questions. So not cool. I really needed a few moments with Cute Overload after that.

Once I get past the immunology test Wednesday and somewhat prepare for my Top 200 drugs quiz Friday, it's time for BREAK! As usual I'm ready to go home and sleep in every day! Curtis and I already have our Saturday planned for Steak n Shake. Why? I don't know. He has coupons. And I haven't eaten there in a while. Classy!

This past weekend was relaxing. I did little to nothing. My friend Diane and I hit up Shalimar in Broad Ripple for their lunch buffet on Friday. Delicious. I really enjoy good Indian food, and I enjoy eating too much of it in one sitting even MORE. I highly recommend the vegetable samosas and chicken tikka masala. Despite it being almost midnight, I could eat all of that right now.

I have nothing else exciting to report. Oh, I got my pharmacy intern license! Prepare to see me in a white coat behind counters doing legitimate pharmacy things! (Scary.)

Ballet, bagels, and other things that start with B

Studio Dress was yesterday--the Nutcracker has finally been assembled! Now come the daily run-throughs. Maybe I'll put a schedule up of what we did during Studio Dress, but now I want to talk about my friend's birthday and what's going to happen today.

So my friend turned twenty! It was incredibly exciting. We went to the near-by Broad Ripple and ate dinner at Ripple Bagel and Deli. I had a hard time deciding what to pick, because the store looks like this:

That's not even the full menu, since I couldn't fit it all in one shot. You can also order the items that are written on pieces of paper tacked up around the blackboard, so the possibilities are sort of overwhelming. But I decided on the Blonde Bombshell, a turkey and lettuce sandwich with veggie cream cheese and not-creamed cheese. I put it on an apple bagel, and they steamed it (their signature thing-y), and it was awesome.

We also got cupcakes from The Flying Cupcake.

Today we are driving to Chicago with Sigma Rho Delta (honorary dance fraternity) to see Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet. So I've got to get a move on, but you can watch this video if you want to know more about one of the pieces we'll be seeing.

The only downfall of this time means my parents usually are unable to travel to Butler, but the fun thing about this weekend is seeing all my friend's parents. Each year it is always interesting to see who my friend's parents are, and it actually explains a lot about their personality. I actually have been fortunate to have my parents here for the weekend, but this year was not that time. My mother actually has knee surgary in September, so traveling and walking around is not an option. In addition to that, my parents realized that this year they will be having to attend two graduations! Mine is in the second week of May, and my twin brother's graduation is in the third weekend of May. This my Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister will have to fly from different parts of the country to attend my graduation. Then, after my graduation we all will fly back with Justin to San Francisco to attend his graduation. It is going to be crazy and hectic, but I am sure we will manage.

Going back to this year's parents weekend, it started off a little hectic! On Friday evening I planned on finishing up some work for the upcoming week. Instead I got a call from Jackie seeing what I was doing, and I decided to head on over to the Apartment Village. I got there and remembered that I have been wanting to update the software on my Blackberry since I got an e-mail that morning letting me know I could update. Jackie let me have her computer, and I started to download away! Literally halfway through the download Jackie's computer died on me. I started to freak out! I read earlier that if the phone was disconnected for any reason the phone may become unuseable! I started to freak out a little more and finally Jackie's computer restarted. Jackie took over and finished the installation. FINALLY, it started to work. When it restarted though, I found out that all my contacts were deleted from my phone. Great! Besides that little mishap, Jackie's Parents arrived at her apartment. I helped them bring in food they were planning to make, and you would have honestly thought they were planning to feed an army! tray after tray, and container after container - we had finally reached our goal of getting everything they had brought in to the apartment. That night we ate dinner at one of Jackie and My favorite Chinese food restruants, and then we headed back to campus. It was around 11:30 when I finally got back from haning out with Jackie and her Parents, and then I decided it was about time to go to bed!

On Saturday I ran in the morning, and then headed over to Jackie's. It was my initial plan to study all day, but of course I knew this was not going to happen. When I got to her apartment her parents had just arrived, and were having the time of their lives in the kitchen. We watched the football game from Jackie and Josie's apartment, then had lunch. EVERYTHING Jackie's parents made was so delicious. They had several kinds of meat, potatoes, cabbage rolls, and spinich. It was so tasty that I literally ate myself into acoma. I decided this was the time I needed to start studying, since it was almost 3PM. But, before I did that I needed some caffine. Coffee in hand I walked back from out Starbucks on campus, and decided it was time to hit the books. The night headed on, and my friend Meredith joined me for some studying. We were happy to see that Halloween was starting to be in full swing. At my off-campus home the little kids in my neighborhood were starting to knock at my door for trick-or-treating. Meredith and I started to hand out candy, but we were sad because it only lasted for little over an hour. Once the festivities were over, Meredith and I got food and watched Slumdog Millionair on HBO, and then she left.

Sunday Morning I made it my mission to get all my homework done. There was once thing that stoped me though. My sister called me to let me know that she was engaged! I was so happy for her, and we honesly talked for a good amount of time. I am so happy for her, and it just added to the amazing weekend I had that was dedicated to family!

BEST WISHES KRISTEN and KEAN!

Why I love marshmallows

The weather = gorgeous. Despite the rain, I've been enjoying the great outdoors because it's been warm enough to venture out in jeans and short sleeves. And since the rain held off last night, it was just about perfect for roasting marshmallows!

S'mores? In a residence hall? Sort of. I've told you about the FIRs for my wing in ResCo. If you're confused, go here. If you're intrigued, go here.

Anyway, Deb and Mike were kind enough to host a s'more-making/hot-dog-eating gathering on their patio outside their apartment in my residence hall. It was a lot of fun--I love marshmallows. In fact, I adore marshmallows.

Marshmallows are like childhood. We always used to camp up in Pennsylvania, and we also had a chiminea on our porch, so my family well versed in marshmallow roasting. Besides trying all the fun tricks like catching it on fire, seeing how many layers you can make, and putting chocolate or peanut butter on them, marshmallows are symbolic of a carefree courage, the type of courage that lets you see how close you can get your marshmallow to the coals without it catching on fire, but if it does catch, it doesn't really matter, because, hey, you're a child and carefree and the marshmallows still taste awesome.

My friend likes marshmallows too.

I stayed for quite a while last night. It was nice to see all the different people I live with outside their little study-holes. We joke that we live in the dancer wing of ResCo because there are a lot of dance majors. And sure enough, some more showed up to join in the chocolate-marshmallow goodness.

Chocolate marshmallows? Oh, yes. To make, insert a piece of chocolate inside the marshmallow. Roast. The chocolate melts in the marshmallow and is pretty much the best thing since anything was ever invented.

Since, I'm not making sense anymore, I'm going to stop typing soon. Basically, I went and roasted marshmallows on a lovely late-October day with the lovely FIRs with my lovely friends. And it was all lovely.

The weekend can't come soon enough!

Today's entry will be a menagerie of topics that will change so fast it will BLOW YOUR MIND.

Clusters: Round Two. Complete. I came out fully intact with the only casualties being some lack of sleep and a tiny bit of hurt pride. That just happens. Four tests in less than a week is always a humbling experience. That's why there's Broad Ripple: Home of the Fanciest Gosh-Darned McDonald's you will EVER happen upon. Diane and I traveled there on Sunday, the day of the hardest fighting in the war on midterms.

If only I remembered how, I could tickle those ivories something proper. (I had to hold my drink so you knew it was a McDonald's.)

You've never seen ketchup dispensed like this. They even had to label it so as to not confuse people who would otherwise think it was triple filtered water.

The fire alarm went off when Diane and I were dining. Someone said the trashcan out front was on fire. ... I call shenanigans.

So what have I been doing to detox after exams? Absolutely nothing. It's been wonderful after over two weeks of nonstop action. Oh! There is one thing: if you have some time and you love Harry Potter, I think it's important for your life that you go to Youtube and search "A Very Potter Musical." As someone who hates musicals, I highly recommend it. It's one of the funniest, most entertaining things I've seen on Youtube in a long time.

Today I went grocery shopping and bought a pumpkin to carve tomorrow with my pharmacy buddies Lindsey and Kelsey. Speaking of pharmacy, we picked up our white coats today for the ceremony next week! I made sure mine fit all right, so now it's hanging on my door to get the wrinkles out. When I tried it on and looked at myself in the mirror, it was like my wedding day or something. Oh Cathryn, hush. Anyway, no pictures yet, because that will be for the ceremony NEXT WEEK. No spoilers!

Back on topic. This weekend. My parents and brother are coming up on Friday night! Saturday morning I am attending a scholarship breakfast with them, then I don't know where we'll go. We've exhausted a lot of the fun touristy things in Indy, like the art museum (IMA) and the State Museum. I could give those another go--they're really fun. :)

Saturday night, my boyfriend Curtis is coming to visit me! I had some Halloween plans, but they got canceled, so I think we're going to eat at Yats over in Broad Ripple! (Is it still considered Broad Ripple? I don't know). Then, after that, I have this chocolate Halloween House to build, so we will probably engage in that and watch one of our favorite movies, Shaun of the Dead.

Best of all, Saturday at midnight, it will be November 1st. And on November 1st begins ... NaNoWriMo.

And that's why Thursday and Friday need to get out the way!

Fall Broke

Get the title? Get it? It's like a pun. Past-tense for the sad realization that not only is it Monday, but clusters start Friday and will go until Tuesday. :(

I had a great time at home! Despite my biochem's teachers best effort to convince us that fall break is for studying before midterms, and no one is supposed to go home, and we should study in the library, yadda yadda, I totally ditched campus and went on many an adventure. I came back with a plaid biker jacket (oxymoron, right?), groceries, and a shelf for the pantry. Because right now our food is sitting sadly in a box in a big mess.

Like most stories, fall break is best told through visual aids.

First things first: got my hair cut! Now I look less like a hobbit from Lord of the Rings!

Next, I did some shopping and I ended up with my friend at Half-Price Books.

I never knew Frice Books sold Cords and Azines.

Half-Price is one of those many stores where you go in not looking for anything in particular, then you leave with 3 books and 2 CDs. And you even left behind over a dozen things you also really wanted to get. Although usually when I'm there looking for school books or a DVD I want, they aren't there. That's some sort of law of physics I'm sure.

One of my favorite things at Half Price is the romance novel clearance section. I can't go into any more detail, but let me just tell you that there are some literary works of gold for only a buck.

My boyfriend Curtis and I had a date night to celebrate being together for four years! We got Indian food and braved the "Sweetest Day" crowd at the mall, then we went and made pumpkin spice lattes with our own cooking skills.

Smile, Curtis. SMILE!

So to wrap up the weekend, Curtis and I had a bout of Rock Band. I'm getting decent at drums. I'm kind of a big deal. ;)

Carry on, my wayward son. Carry on.

It's a little blurry, but you get the idea. I'm multi-talented and I have a great Alanis Morrissette impression.

Hope everyone had a good fall break! Good luck with all of your papers and mid-terms and the like. I'll be in the library until next week.

Don't you hate it when you're at a party and you're the person who doesn't know anybody--or even worse, you're at some neighborhood function and everyone still thinks you're 8 years old--and you can't come up with anything to talk about so you cop out and say, "Man, craaazy weather we've been having, right?"

That's how I'm feeling about my life right now. Hence this blog post starting with the weather.

I was driving to work today and the leaves are starting to change! Fall is by far my favorite season out of the year, although the whole "cooling down" bit needs to slow down. I remember last week I could see my breath walking to my 8 AM class. And no, Mother Nature, I did not bring a coat to school yet, so this just isn't fair.

Fall break begins in less than 24 hours! I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow because 5 inches is just too long. :) I can't decide if I want to go with the length that's in my current profile picture or if I want to try something a little different. Curly hair is sort of... tricky to style. You basically get one style (curly) in different lengths, and my hair doesn't straighten without a big fight so I hardly ever bother with it. I digress.

I have to indulge in one of my guilty pleasures on DVR since I missed the season premiere two weeks ago. No, it's not House or Grey's Anatomy or anything. It's--The Clone Wars. Okay, the secret's out. Not only do I like Star Wars, but I also religiously watch a children's cartoon. It has a parental warning for violence, that makes it mature enough for a college student, right?!

As usual, fall break is my four days at home to throw together a Halloween costume. This year, I'm planning on doing Sherlock Holmes in honor of the new movie coming out this Christmas with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson. I'm excited. Everyone else is grumbling saying it looks "stupid" and "not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle-y enough." Okay have you seen anything with Downey Jr. in it lately? It's going to be great. Anyway, I'll post some sneak peak pictures of the costume after I get it together!

My project for break, courtesy of my friends Kaitlin and Amy from back home:

IT'S MADE ENTIRELY OUT OF CANDY!

My obsession with...MAIL.

SNAIL MAIL!

It's official. I am addicted. I find myself checking my mailbox every day in Schwitzer's lobby. So far I have gotten:

School books :(

Letters from Sororities

Cards from my Nana :) (I LOVE YOU!)

Birthday Cards

A Necklace

However, this has just spurred on my obsession. The one thing I am looking for in my tiny, little Schwitzer mailbox is the... yellow slip. The yellow slips will forever live in infamy. Why? Well, when you get a yellow slip, you have a package; said package is often far too large to fit into the little, tiny mailbox. When you a slip, you typically have a... CARE PACKAGE. Best gift ever. Especially when they are unexpected.

The moral to this tale is... send college students letters, packages, a hershey's kiss... anything. Some suggestions are:

FOOD-- especially things like homemade cookies!

Clothing-- winter clothes are pretty useful, right about now

A random inside joke gift--- like fruit rollups or a ringpop

A Handwritten letter-- colored OR

A colored picture

Photos-- there is always room for another photo

My friend Laura reminded me of the Holy Grail of all care packages, the HIP KIT! A hip kit is a care package without any of the handy work, already assembled, where you just purchase and send to your loved one going through the throngs of higher education. Hip Kits can be for any occasion, type of kid, or need. My personal favorite is the Freshmen Survival Kit.

What I am trying to get at is... Parents, send your kids stuff. They will come home more often, I swear... it works. Students, talk to your parents, coax them into sending lovely little gifts (perhaps even send them something in the mail). Share the love... via post.

<3 Dawgs,

Tay

The positive side of eight o'clock classes

I have four eight o'clock classes this semester.

Isn't that a cheery start to a blog post?

I have Voice at 8 am on Monday and Wednesday, and I have Music Theory for Dance on Tuesday and Thursday. My Fridays basically rock since my first class is not until 10 am (and today, English was cancelled, so I only have THREE, count 'em, THREE classes. Three classes! That's all! And they are all dance classes!) N-E-way... There are definite downsides to eight o'clock classes. I'm sure I don't have to spell them out for you.

(Try singing at eight in the morning. Try singing at eight in the morning when you can't even hold a tune at three in the afternoon. I'm learning a lot in Voice class.)

But there are a few perks to having classes in the mornings. One such perk is the ResCo breakfast. ResCo is open on the weekdays for breakfast and for lunch. Atherton is open on the weekends for breakfast, every day for lunch, and every day for dinner. I am a firm believer in ResCo's superiority, but I'm not going to get into that right now. Instead, I thought I'd give you a rundown of what was offered this morning at ResCo and what I chose.

THE PICTURE DIDN'T LOAD. How sad. We've been having technical difficulties with the blogging software. When I say "we," I mean the technology people. You can see the picture here.

Did you look at the picture? Really? Okay. Good. This morning I had scrambled eggs on the English muffin with half a grapefruit. And some soy milk. It was awesome.

The end.

[EDIT: They've fixed the technology! Yay! So here's your picture, a week or so later. If you still care.]
