As a student I get into all home games for free, football has been great, and the the team is still undefeated! Everyone is looking forward to Basketball season, the Dawgs are ranked 10th in the preseason coaches' poll, and have a lot of hype surrounding this season! I'm sure as the basketball season gets started I'll keep you up to date!

Until next time.

I can't believe I posted almost two months ago.

I'm not sure where the time went, but I know it went there FAST. Between school visits in the day, and college fairs at night, the past two months have been booked solid 12 hour days. (at least!) I still have a few days of visits left, but nothing like September and October. I want to say that it's been the best travel season, but to be honest, it hasn't. I've struggled a bit in my new role as a regional representative, and have had some unlucky circumstances cloud these past couple of months.

HOWEVER, its a new month, and I'm blogging and I am hoping everything turns out for the best! I'm ready to get back into the rhythm of a regular schedule which includes eating at normal times, working somewhat normal hours and working out! I'll keep you all posted as to how this goes. ;)

We've had a few visit days and a lot of students visiting campus. Please continue! I maintain that campus is at it's best in the fall. Trust me, you won't want to miss the trees changing. ABSOLUTELY beautiful. And with the football team at 8-0, you can't ask for a more perfect way to spend a weekend! GO DAWGS!

My focus after travel is reading files. I've been pleasantly surprised this year with how good some of the essays are. Its time consuming to read an application, but one of my favorite parts of my job. Seniors-please don't forget! Our application deadline is November 15th! Get your applications in so you'll hear in December what your admission decision is!!!

Again, as always, please let me know if you need anything!

Bulldog Beauty Contest Recap & Fall Update - 2009

So I figure I owe my readership a recap of the Bulldog Beauty Contest,
especially now that it’s been almost two weeks since the event has come
and gone. I would have done an immediate follow-up, but my old man,
also my designated keyboard specialist, decided to be gone all last
week and didn’t have time to get to my blog, or so was his excuse. (He
took a little trip via semi to Miami, Fla. You can read all about it
here: http://www.visionracing.com/news/index.cfm?cid=24003)

So
I’m behind on the blog, but that’s nothing new. I am getting to be
quite the busy bulldog these days so a late blog is unfortunately
becoming the norm.

How about that Bulldog Beauty Contest?! 2009
was undoubtedly our best contest to date as we had a record 87 dogs
pre-register and 93 dogs participate (believe it or not, we finished in
one hour!).

A hearty congratulations goes out to this year’s
category winners, including our overall winner and “Best in Show” for
the second consecutive year, Mr. Hugo Casey, owned by Butler alumna,
Kearsten Casey of South Bend, Ind.

Hugo earned the honor of
“Best Butler Spirit” by wearing a No. 54 Matt Howard basketball jersey,
wristbands, Dawg Pound cap, basketball necklace/medallion, etc. in
order to advance to the final round and win his second “Best in Show”
title. He was handsomely rewarded for his efforts with a year’s supply
of Holistic Select dog food courtesy of Eagle Pack Pet Food, WellPet
and our good friends at City Dogs Grocery. That’s more than a $600
value for Hugo!

Not only that, but later on in the day, Hugo caught up with his
likeness, Mr. Matt Howard himself and the pair got their picture
together. All I can say is the resemblance is uncanny…brothers from
different mothers.

In addition to Hugo, here are a few more of my favorite contestants from this year's competition:

For

got to offer up my sincere appreciation to our expert panel of judges
which grew to seven members strong this year to accommodate for our two
celebrities, Paul Poteet and Tom Davis of WRTV-6,
Indianapolis’ local ABC-TV affiliate. Paul and Tom had a good time at
the event, shot some footage and even had a couple of contestants in
the studio on Monday morning, Oct. 5th, to recap the event.

Joining
Paul and Tom at the judges table was Kim Netherland of City Dogs
Grocery, Dr. AJ Stump and Kathy Dearing of the Ovid Butler Society
Executive Committee, Thom Burleson of the Alumni Board, and Jonathan
Spear of the Butler University Student Foundation.

Backing them
up was a great group of volunteers made up of my colleagues and Butler
staff, and of course, a record crowd that filled all five sets of
bleachers and more.

Finally, a BIG thanks goes to our sponsors
that made this event possible…City Dogs Grocery, WellPet, Eagle Pack
Pet Food, the Ovid Butler Society Executive Committee, Woodland Animal
Hospital, VCA Animal Hospitals, Susan Smith, Dr. Kurt and Julia
Phillips, and Dr. Deborah Rowley. They deserve all of the credit! Thank
you!

Also, Butler student Alyson Ahrns put togther a nice video recap of the event for the Butler Beat that you can watch right here:

While
Homecoming weekend is always a great time to reunite with friends,
family and your alma mater, it has also served as a quasi kick-off to a
wonderful fall season on campus. In case you didn’t know, it’s a great
time to be a Butler Bulldog…and I’m not just talking about the cooler
weather.

The men’s football team is the only undefeated NCAA
Division I football team left in the state of Indiana with a 5-0
record; most recently winning in dramatic fashion at Homecoming with a
last second field goal over San Diego. Combine that with the fact that
men’s soccer is 8-1-1 and ranked no. 18 in the latest Soccer America
poll, our men’s cross country program is ranked No. 20 in the nation
and basketball practice starts TODAY and I’m more than excited about
being THE Butler Bulldog.

Of course, with all of that means that
my social calendar is filling up for the fall…between athletic
contests, student events, alumni events, school visits, photo shoots
and whatever else people can think up, I’m booked solid. It’s a tough
life, but somebody’s gotta do it.

I’ll just try and be better
about updating you with my engagements and events as they happen, as
opposed to waiting weeks in between blog posts. Of course, you can
always keep closer tabs on me through my Twitter feed (www.Twitter.com/ButlerBlue2), which is updated much more frequently and features exclusive photos.

On
the docket is a full-plate Saturday for this ol’ pooch. We’ll get
started bright, early and bushy-tailed at Hinkle Fieldhouse to welcome
a very select few guests who signed up early to witness one of the
first practices for the top-15 ranked men’s basketball team. Then after
practice head coach Brad Stevens will address the group and share his
outlook on the season and our incredibly tough schedule. This event is
being put on by the Central Indiana Alumni Chapter is our own version
of “Midnight Madness,” only much more subdued and with less fanfare…The
Butler Way.

After that I’ll head outside to hit up the
tailgating festivities in preparation for the men’s football game at 1
p.m. versus Valparaiso. I planning on cruising by the Butler Football
Class of 1959 tailgate and the Butler faculty and staff tailgate, but
I’m open to hanging out with anyone who is out there filling the crisp
fall air with warm Butler spirit. And maybe while my dad isn’t looking
you could slip me a little something from the food table! Shhh, it will
be our secret.

And hey, in case you missed it, you'll probably
get to see me on TV a bit more often this winter as our athletic
department has struck a new TV deal with Indy's local MyINDY-TV, Channel 23, which will broadcast 13 LIVE game telecasts from
historic Hinkle Fieldhouse as well as on the road! Combine that with
the eight games scheduled for ESPN, the one on BTN, the other on FSN
and we have a chance to have 26 of our 28 regular season games played
on TV! You could be seeing a lot of me in your living room this winter!

Alright,
that should be plenty of Butler Blue II scoop for now, but before I
sign off, I did want to let you know that progress continues to be made
on my 2010 calendar. So hopefully we can get it sent to print and on
the Butler bookstore shelves in time for the holiday season!

Woof!

Blue II

In bed?

Yes, usually. But not on Homecoming Saturday!

I'm not sure exactly how or when this started, but at least as long as I've been at Butler, there has been a kind of ridiculous senior Homecoming tradition: At 7 am, two of the bars in the nearby Broad Ripple neighborhood open their doors and tons of seniors crowd in there for our first class reunion of sorts.

At 11:30 pm the night before, my friends and I were still up in the air about it. Did we really want to wake up at 6 am to go to the bars by 7? 6 AM?!? But, tradition is a powerful thing, and this is the ONLY time in our lives that drinking at 7 am would be socially acceptable. There's a definite gimmick factor there.

Because the theme of Homecoming was "Rewind through Time," we decided to dress in the style of the 80s. I mean, if you're at the bars at 7 am, you already look ridiculous, so why not embrace it?

Keepin' it classy (pinkies up) with mimosas - a drink you can kind of justify in the morning because it has orange juice.

In the end, I think we were all really glad we went. It was something funny we will never forget, and it was great to see so many seniors in one place. I actually did get to talk to a lot of people I haven't seen in ages, so it was a successful morning.

We just missed getting back in time for the traditional chariot races, unfortunately, but we took a short nap (we had been up since SIX AM, people!) and then went to watch the Homecoming Parade and then the football game.

I won't lie; I don't care about football at all, whether at Butler or anywhere else, but you have to go at Homecoming for the social experience. All the students sit on blankets on the hill in the endzone, and there were tons of young alumni that graduated last year visiting! Good times.

The best part of the day, though, was definitely the announcement of the Homecoming results. I mentioned earlier this week that one of my best Butler friends, Betsy, was the Homecoming Queen candidate for Ross Hall, the mostly-freshmen residence hall where she is an RA. She and our friend Anthony, the King candidate, put on a very clever campaign, and put SO much work into getting the freshmen at Ross involved in there very first Homecoming, so I was not at all surprised but totally thrilled when Betsy was named HOMECOMING QUEEN! I was so proud and thrilled, and took a million pictures of her with her crown! haha. The best part was when we went out to dinner that night and we all made her wear the crown, and this little girl in the restaurant ran up behind her and just pointed and stared in awe. Betsy is Shirley the Queen!

So, with all these unexpected and fun adventures, my senior Homecoming was definitely my favorite so far! I still can't believe I'm so old, but at least it's a good time. Happy Homecoming, Bulldogs!

The 48 hr day of Homecoming

The plan WAS to write these blogs all before Sunday but evidently that didn't work out so what started off as a simple Friday night bash ended for me at like 11pm last night. Note to self get more that 3 hrs of sleep between homecoming activities, which include but are not limited to sneaking food and drink into the game, running about and screaming hysterically, meeting loads of newbies and last but by all means least watching the game This was a good year we finally beat San Diego and it wasn't too cold.

Well it's all over so unfortunately I have to get back into my scholastic frame of mind... sigh! Well Home Coming couldn't have come at a better time for me this year putting an end to the monotony of 4 exams back to back. Now as I sit writing this blog I'm thinking 'Oh dear I have a bio-computing exam on Monday and I haven't started studying for it yet ' Thats ok cause I don't regret one minute of this weekend. This realization helped me discover my very own mantra

A Week end of HomeComing Is A Week end Well Spent

More Laughs on Me

It appears that my little blooper
with fellow Butler University mascot, Hink, is getting quite the laughs
and the number of views on YouTube (BlueTube) is growing, so that's
good, I guess. If you missed it, just scroll down to my previous blog
entry and enjoy. And for those of you that have seen it and had a good
laugh, well then, you are welcome.

Let me see if I can offer up
another chuckle thanks to some pictures of the incident provided by
university photographer, Brent Smith. Before turning his lens to the
actual football players running onto the pitch, Brent was able to
capture a couple of frames of Hink and I just before we went down.

As
you analyze the photos, you'll see that my dad can see this mishap
coming a mile away, that I might actually be enjoying run-in with Hink,
and that Hink is maintaining the same stoic look that he's always
sporting...

I
can only imagine what the photos would have looked like had Brent got
us making our decent to the turf. Oh well, at least we have the video to sustain us and our comedic ventures.

Also,
as promised, below are photos produced by Brent and his handy camera,
from my fall photoshoot last week. You'll see my dad and his very white
feet getting me all set up and positioned next to that fine array of
fall-like objects...it's at those moments that I wonder if I have it
better or worse than most dogs. Oh well, it goes with the territory.

Speaking
of territory, those photos were actually shot on another dog's domain,
and that dog would be the young Geeves Rodgers. The "Rodgers" is of
course, that of Nick Rodgers fame....a
fine Butler student athlete as a member of our men's basketball team.
His mom Sheryl is on staff at the university and invited us to her home
to use her props for the shot. That meant I got to meet Geeves, who is,
shall we say, timid. That's okay, he's still finding his way.

Alright,
that's enough for today. It's another wet day in Central Indiana and
that's perfect sleeping weather for bulldogs, so I must not be
interrupted any longer. It's back to napping!

Blue II

A Laugh at My Expense

Once again I must begin by apologizing for the duration between blog
entries. And once again you can blame my dad, who has been traveling on
behalf of the university, been sick, and whom also has been citing a
lack of material to blog about.

Frankly, I find all of that to
be nothing more than a list of weak excuses, but what could I do? Well,
I did about the only thing I could do and provide him with a little
“material” to blog about. Of course, it wasn’t really my intention, as
you’ll be able to see, but it worked, so it was worth.

So over
the past two or three weeks I’ve been busy with work as usual, Butler
sporting events, student events, Staff Assembly meetings, a sorority
function as well as a fall photo shoot (pictures coming soon). Of
course, all of this you can see and follow along with on Twitter, including photos at www.twitpic.com/photos/butlerblue2.

Otherwise,
maybe you’ve seen me featured in a handful of pieces over the last week
or so, including the new Homecoming poster, the Butler Basketball
season ticket promo wrap for The Indianapolis Star (pictured) and the
season ticket TV advertisement (below).

And
if that weren’t enough, I’ve got it on good authority that a Butler
Blue II 2010 Calendar will be on sale in the Butler Bookstore later
this fall! I’ll keep you posted on that project, but it goes without
saying that a calendar of yours truly makes a great stocking stuffer!

Now,
that’s all well and good, but I’ve left you in suspense long enough.
It’s time to bring on the laughs. Let me just preface this next video
clip by saying that it is hilarious. Sure, it came at my expense, but
if we can’t laugh at ourselves every now and again then life just isn’t
worth living.

So here’s a clip that was shot by my mom with her
iPhone and it is of my dad and I running the Butler Bulldogs football
team onto the field for their third game of the season and rout of
Hanover. This is the standard routine for us and we do it at all of the
football games. In fact, it’s one of my favorite jobs as mascot, only
this time things didn’t go quite as planned.

This time, just as
I was making my move to take the team onto the gridiron, my Butler
Bulldog mascot counterpart, Hink, also made his attack and well, the
rest is history. Add in a dramatic feature like a collective gasp from
the crowd and somehow capture it all on video and voila, you’ve got
yourself a nice entry for America’s Funniest Home Videos!

Anyway, here, it’s time you just watched this thing for yourself and had a hearty laugh…

Needless
to say, we’ll be working out that little scenario before Homecoming. So
I hope this video provides a good lesson, and that lesson, besides
properly timing up pregame activities, is to not take ourselves so
seriously and to be willing to have a good laugh at our own expense.

I
can’t be mad at anyone…in the heat of the moment I’m not one to notice
much of my surroundings and Hink is not one known for his great vision
so something like this was bound to happen. What can you do but dust
yourself off and have a good laugh?

Pretty good way to start off the week, huh? Feel free to send that to a friend that needs a little lift. It should do the trick!

Blue II

Butler
football - not nationally renowned, recognized, or ranked; but despite this, or
the fact that we are the only Division-1 team on campus that is a member of the
FCS championship subdivision, I can assure you that we play some ball! The
Pioneer Football League is home to Dayton, Jacksonville, Davidson, San Diego, and
others, as well as your own Butler Bulldogs.

Although
it takes a lot of time, energy, and effort to be a part of this team, the juice
is easily worth the squeeze. During the season, we lift 2-3 times a week in
addition to our meetings and practices, which usually last from 3:00 - 6:15 PM.
During off-season, we lift every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday with
early morning runs every Tuesday and Thursday. Although it can be difficult to
wake up at 5:30 AM for off-season conditioning, it is easy to gain motivation
simply by thinking about the season and the upcoming games. While I describe
this schedule, it is imperative to keep in mind that I am a punter and kicker -
hence I am not given the great pleasure of watching film every day in order to
prepare for our next opponent...

While
this schedule sounds intimidating, it is imperative that one remembers that
this is a collegiate sport. Rest assured there is still plenty of time for
homework, studying, as well as time to relax and be a normal student. Despite
the stressful schedule, the football team has an average GPA that is at 3.0. If
anything, the time constraints ensure that one is efficient when given free
time.

The
coaching staff continually tells us "football is the biggest fraternity on
campus." Although at first I was skeptical, I now believe it through and
through. Every member on the team has now become my brother. A high percentage
of my memories here at Butler come from the coaches as well as the team. For
example, just last Saturday, the entire offense and myself belted out a wicked
rendition of "Lean on Me" after we won our season-opener. After our
Emmy-deserving performance, our starting right guard, who is formally referred
to as "Big Pete," had enough bravado to belt out "Ain't too Proud to Beg" by
the Temptations. These events occurred in a mere hour; imagine the memories
created after spending four years with 100 different brothers.

Our
football team is comprised of about 100 players from all corners of the
country. Off the top of my head, I know Bulldogs who hail from California, Kentucky,
North Carolina, Texas, Washington, and of course the greatest state in the
nation - Michigan!

Although
playing a collegiate sport can be extremely stressful, difficult, and
exhausting, I would not have it any other way. I have become who I am today
because of the lessons that this sport has taught me. I strongly encourage all
those who have the opportunity, to continue their athletic careers at the
collegiate level. Even if one was not granted the opportunity to play at the
Division I level, I firmly believe that intramurals would suffice and provide
countless lessons as well as excellent memories.

Lastly,
I just want to say that I could not be more proud to represent this University.
It always gives me chills when you see the support from the school as well as
the community. The team is not the only one working hard; the band, the
cheerleaders, the alumni, the students, as well our parents are putting in
monumental amounts of time and effort to ensure that this program run smoothly.

Why I have poor study habits

As my first week of exams gets in full swing I have been thinking about why I feel so pathetically unprepared. The only things I can think of to blame it on are the amazing activities going on all the time at Butler! When an impromptu group forms to throw a frisbee on the mall at midnight, who wants to crack open the Chemistry book then? From midnight games of frisbee and capture the flag, to callouts and interviews for several campus organizations including College Mentors for Kids (CMFK), Butler University Student Foundation (BUSF), and Campus Crusades for Christ (CRU), I have been kept busy. As you can also tell, we are big on acronyms here at Butler! Click here to access a more complete list of the many student organizations you can be involved in at Butler. Homecoming Kickoff was tonight, and although I wasn't able to make it, I've heard a lot about it! Homecoming is a big deal on campus and the frats/sororities/residence halls apparently go all out in decorations! I'm looking forward to my first Butler Homecoming experience. Football season is in full swing now, and is very apparent on Sundays and Mondays. The Ross basement and dorm rooms fill up with diehard fans and apathetic viewers. Whenever a play is made or failed, you can hear screams of joy and disappointment up and down the halls.

Despite all these activities, I have managed to find time to squeeze some classes into my college career as well. I have a full course load of 18 credit hours and now that exams and new material are starting, I will be kept very busy! I'm looking forward for this Thursday to be over since I have a Chem and Spanish exam as well as a group presentation in my first year seminar. I have nothing to complain about though, and am enjoying my "easier time" until pharmacy classes start in a year or two.

Most of the textbooks/novels and notes for my classes!

One of the most interesting classes I'm in is my first year seminar, Writing on Drugs. We read and discuss pieces written on drugs and drug use and discuss the authors' viewpoints and writing techniques. It has proven interesting and opened my eyes to a different "culture." Classes are completely different than high school, and it's been a challenge balancing my newfound freedom with necessary studying, but is a great experience and has been an interesting journey so far!

Until next time.

Reflections of a three day weekend

I have officially decided that all weekends should be three day weekends!

Where do I start? There has been so much going on the past few days that I won't bore you with the details and try to just hit the highlights. I'm involved with Campus Crusades for Christ (CRU) and Friday evening we took a trip to downtown Indy for a photo scavenger hunt. Even though I only live an hour away and have a brother who lives in Indy, I had never walked around downtown before. It was a fun experience, downtown is pretty awesome at night, and embarrasing yourself in public for the sake of competition only enhances the experience!

Saturday marked the first day for Butler football, with the Dawgs smashing Albion 42-3!

Saturday afternoon involved a bit of campus golf...which if you don't know what that is, not to worry, I didn't until I came here either. Basically you hit tennis balls around campus at certain landmarks. Unfortunately for me, actual golf is much harder than it is on the Wii, as was reflected by my score.

Sunday my roomate Adam, some friends, and I went to church then went to a local park and played some disc golf! I went home Sunday evening to visit my family and get some things that I had forgotten. It was only for a day and there wasn't much to do, but I enjoyed homecooked food, toilet paper that tears off in squares, the love of my dog, and showering barefoot. It's the little things in life that make it so great.

Unfortunately three day weekends have their unintended consequences...Monday afternoon I realized that school was starting on Tuesday, and I had a substantial amount of reading and studying to do. Whoops.

Feel free to send questions my way! Thanks for reading!

    Until next time
