Getting Around Indianapolis

Indianapolis located just about in the center of the state of Indiana. Taking up 402 square miles and the balance of Marion County, Indianapolis is mostly set on a grid-style system of streets running north-south or east-west in orientation. Some streets that are main arteries into the city run on angles, like spokes on a wheel. The city is bisected between east and west by Meridian Street, which if followed south to downtown Indianapolis will lead directly to Monument Circle, the center of the city.

In addition to the surface streets, there are 5 major interstate highways that run through Indianapolis. The most prominent of these is I-465, which forms a kind of circle or loop around the city. I-65 runs north-south through the city, taking you to Chicago or Louisville, Kentucky. I-70 runs northeast-southwest through the city, taking you to Columbus, Ohio or St. Louis, Missouri. I-74 takes you to Cincinnati, Ohio or Peoria, Illinois running southeast-northwest through the city. And finally, I-69 runs to the north out of Indianapolis, and takes you to the state of Michigan. Most of the streets that run east-west are numbered, such as 46th Street which leads into the main entrance of Butler’s campus.
